Upgrade Preamp from MyTek Manhattan II?

I’m currently using a MyTek Manhattan II as my source (network card installed), DAC, and preamp - all for digital streaming from Qobuz/Tidal.

While the multi-purpose MyTek was great for a time, I think I’d like to try to eke some performance out with a separate preamp. I’m more confident (for now) in the MyTek as a source/DAC.

Ideally I’d like to get into a Pass Labs XP-22/30/32, but for now I’d like to see if a cheaper upgrade would be effective. Any thoughts on a mid grade (non-tube) preamp that would be an upgrade to the MyTek?

in particular I have my eye on the Benchmark LA4. Just not sure if it will be enough of an upgrade to make it worth it.

Thanks in advance for the thoughts!

In your particular case I think you'd want to go with color and juicyness as opposed to trying to get just technically more accurate.

I'd prefer Luxman for solid state pre, and a CJ for tube.

To me, neutral ness is the best quality for a preamp (control center.)

But everyone is different. Often markedly so.

Unless you need more features you'd better be clear about what SQ is best for you. Hoping for "better" sound will probably not get you to the promised land.

Thanks for the response.  I think the current Luxman preamp line (even in used condition) is roughly the same price as most of the Pass Labs preamps I have my eye on.  The goal would be to have an interim purchase, perhaps $5K or less, that would be an "improvement" over the MyTek - this is assuming that I can "improve" on the MyTek for that much, which is really the question.
