Help choosing a DAC

Hi folks, need some help choosing a DAC, hoping you all can help me reach a decision. My current system is as follows:

  1. Magnepan 1.7i
  2. Conrad-Johnson Classic 2 SE Preamp
  3. C-J MF2250 SE AMP
  4. OPPO 105D
  5. Cardas, Transparent cabling
  6. REL S3SHO sub woofer

Considering this setup, would you all choose the Denafrips Pontus or the Venus. I reached out to Vinshine and they said, if you are a music lover then choose Pontus, if you are a critical listener then choose Venus. I am both ? Please help me decide, is it worth stepping up to the Venus. Also my purchase philosophy is BIFL (Buy It For Life), not sure if that helps in giving me some advise. Thank you all.

I think it's best to try to find a way to listen to different DACs in your system. I recently listened to a Aries Cerat and a Mola Mola DAC. Both had very strong recommendations and I didn't like either one. Different systems, rooms, and preferences play such a critical role into what "your ears" will prefer.

That is a nice system.   I owned that pre and it is a sleeper.   My problem with Denafrips is there is no return policy.     What is your budget ?   Maybe consider used ,   check out TMR in Colorado.  They have a good return policy.

I’m listening to Handel’s Messiah right now as I type. Using the Pontus II. Electronics are CJ 2250 and ET3 SE :-). Merlin Black Magic speakers and two Velodyne subs ( also have the Oppo) so you could say our systems are very similar to say the least. Obviously I’m a little prejudice but it’s quite a nice system and very musical. I also have the Terminator Plus in another system that I have played using the CJ components. Big step up from the Pontus as it should be. I only mention this because the Venus will get you much closer to the Terminator than the Pontus. Not quite sure what Vinshine means but as a “music lover/critical listener” I’d definitely opt for the Venus. Also not sure that it will satisfy your BIFL though so you might want to save up for at least the Terminator II before calling it quits (if that’s even possible).

@ricred1 I wish I could listen to them, unfortunately that is not an option for Denfrips and I have read so many reviews that are positive that I do want to consider them. I don't know what other options I have other than them. I agree room synergy plays a big role, but then doesn't that already decided for with the rest of your system? Thank you for your response.

@oddiofyl Thank you, it works well, I do love it.  When you say it is a sleeper, do you mean a keeper? My budget is $2500 I would love to consider used, matter of fact that would be my 1'st option. Thank you for the response.
