what is more popular silver or black face plates

I prefer black because unlike children, equipment should be heard and not seen.
 

However, I will buy any color if there is a deal to be made (there are also exceptions too; I surprised myself when I selected red for my office speakers, without regrets).

Fender is making class D modeling versions of those amps-- the so-called Tone Master series. There are good reports on their sonics but complaints about their pricing and concerns about whether they can be adequately serviced.
