Focals latest - Cat Houses?

I’m sorry but all I can think of when I look at these is they look like $70,000 cat houses.

OK, now to be less catty about the subject I was really curious how much Focal had taken advantage of the DSP capabilities to alter how the active Focals differ from their similar sized passive models.  In particular the midrange to tweeter crossover point and off-axis response.  The use of micro tweeters is a challenge for B&W as well as Focal in terms of frequency extension and EQ so I thought perhaps the crossover designers would have a hard time keeping the house sound and not addressing this behavior.

I found the Diva Utopia measurements here but sadly for some odd reason Stereophile provided a very limited set of measurements for these speakers.  It makes sense to not include the impedance charts here but the highly detailed off-axis response measurements which JA usually does were also absent.

Given the intended audience and use I think the U shaped frequency curve is probably ideal so I’m not criticizing that at all.

The pricing though, $30,000 more adds... the equivalent of an additional 8" woofer per side.   Compared to other active speakers like ATC, Legacy these are priced pretty astronomically.

Yes, thank you Erik (@erik_squires) It was a purrrrfect post to remind us all that this is a hobby and is supposed to be fun. Something that seems to be missing in these forums more and more...

Oh well, guess we just need to remember the words of two greats in the audio business, Jason Stoddard and Mike Moffat.... Schiit Happens!

Thanks @jeffbij  - It is supposed to be fun and to be honest I feel a little guilty making fun of these speakers.  There are real human beings in France (or India?) whose talents are being spent imagining new ways to house our pets... er, I mean speakers but at $70k a pair I have a real tough time holding back on the absurdity.

Also, really interesting to note the difference in measurements Stereophile took for the Focal Diva Utopia actives and the Grimm LS1.

The Grimm gets detailed off-axis as well as as step response.

Still, they do note that the Focals rings like a cardboard box in comparison.  laugh
