Data....very very sorry to hear about your son.
Yesterday I was out for a 60 mile bike ride with a local club...like Clueless I too raced when I was younger (8 seasons) and find cycling to be a great passion. About 10 miles into the ride we rode up on an accident and I saw the yellow body bags...this is the second time I have seen this while riding. A man and his son-in-law were hit by a car on PCH (in Huntington Beach, CA). Apparently an accident (the guy was not drunk). The man was killed and his son-and -law is in critical condition with a broken back. Yes, the brain does allow us to ignore such tragedy until we actually are confronted with it.
