Fleetwood Mac

Best band ever?

Anyway, I've been listening to self title, Rumors, and Tusk repeatedly the past 2 years. Can anyone recommend the next step in Fleetwood fandom? I'm not a huge fan of live albums, but will venture in that direction if absolutely necessary, ie Johnny Cash.

Before the girls and the pop hits came along,Fleetwood Mac was a great blues band founded by Peter Green. From 1967 to 1969 they were the top blues band in England. If you want to know where their roots are try to find any albums they released on the Blue Horizon label.
There's a good chance that if the OP is into the Stevie Nicks Lindsey Buckingham Fleetwood Mac era, they may not like the older Blues oriented FM records of the Peter Green era.

The only other stellar Stevie, Lindsey era Mac album I can think of would be Tango In The Night.

Absolutely right.

They actually have two albums that are titled only "Fleetwood Mac" - one from 1968 and one from 1975. They bear virtually no resemblance to each other. The first is great blues stuff in the vein of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and the other much more pop oriented.

You'll miss some good stuff if you ignore the earlier period.

I've always thought "Mirage" was underrated...and a pretty nice recording, too. It's not up to par with the eponymous album, much less "Rumors," but I like it at least as much as "Tusk." YMMV....
then play on, with peter green, is one of the great lost albums of the 60s--it features the original "o well" and a bunch a really cool, strange stuff. i dig the kiln house/bare trees/future games stuff, too--danny kirwan was a hugely underrecognized guitarist and writer.
