Looking for a CD / SACD player. Also, tell me about Esoteric
My only caution regarding Esoteric may no longer be relevant (read on), but here it is: I bought my multi-format player (the DV-50s) used, and had it shipped to me. It weighs 46 lbs., and the Esoteric shipping carton barely survived the trip. ...
Thinking About Selling and Replacing My Pop/Rock Vinyl Collection
My LP library was started in it’s present incarnation in 1968 (that year I got my first adult turntable---a Garrard SL55 with a Shure M44e cartridge, and replaced all the LP’s I had ruined playing them on my kiddie record player with new copies...
Elvis Costello's favorite album of his own.
I recently acquired a copy of the expanded CD edition of King Of America (which includes a bonus disc containing 21 demo, outtake, and live versions of the album’s songs). I also have the album on LP in a UK pressing and the one from MoFi (whic...
Album(s) That Took The Longest To Come Around To
As I have previously recounted on several occasions, I was mystified by The Band's 1968 debut album Music From Big Pink when it was released. I was completely in the throes of my love for the likes of Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Sure...
4th of July Music
The Blasters: Their 1980 album entitled "American Music". They were (are?) a Los Angeles band playing 100% American Roots Rock music: Rock 'n' Roll (meaning from the 1950's), Rockabilly, Blues, and Hillbilly. Their main songwriter, for you youn...
Why I don't hear bass drums on Jazz LPs?
A good YouTube channel to watch is that of Ken Micallef. He's a Stereophile equipment reviewer, but has also written pieces for several of the drum magazines. He moved to NYC years ago to pursue a career as a drummer, but eventually decided he,...
Why I don't hear bass drums on Jazz LPs?
@mijostyn: Webb’s bass drum may have been 28" in diameter, which was typical at the time. Or it may have been even 32", a common size of marching band bass drums. The drummers of the 1920’s put together their own sets, not buying them already a...
Tune of the Day
Excellent Steve! Mine is also an Esoteric, but an old multi-format player (DV-50s), which I bought from Arthur Salvatore. 46 lbs! It replaced a Marantz CD-80 (itself a very heavy beast), the only other digital player I’ve owned.
Tune of the Day
  Damn Steve, your first?
Why I don't hear bass drums on Jazz LPs?
One drummer whom all the other musician’s in the Jazz and Big bands of the 1930’s and 40’s really liked playing with was Dave Tough. While his technical chops were not as well developed as some of the other drummers, and he therefore couldn’t s...
Gold Lion AX7 in tube preamp
For lower gain you can substitute a 5751 for the 12ax7 in many circuits.
Why I don't hear bass drums on Jazz LPs?
@lewm: Oh man Lew, I was playing with a guitarist who wanted include "Take Five" in his live shows. I can’t tell you how hard Morello’s part in that song is to play convincingly. He asked me if I could do it, and I replied "Sort of". Not even c...
Why I don't hear bass drums on Jazz LPs?
In the 1990’s Earl Palmer’s jazz trio (piano, bass, drums) was performing in the bar at Chadney’s Restaurant in Burbank, located directly across the street from the NBC studio where the Tonight Show is taped. I lived two blocks away, and would ...
New In 2024
On August 12th Real Gone Music is releasing the never-before issued recordings Dusty Springfield made in 1971 with Jeff Barry (famous for his Pop songwriting with partner Ellie Greenwich) producing, entitled Faithful. It is a pressing of 1500 L...
VPI to What
The only other table I'm lusting for is a Garrard 401 or Thorens TD-124 Mk.2. I had a TD-125 back in the mid-70's (with an SME 3009 mounted on it), and had nothing but trouble with it.
