haha we have come full circle (kind of) in that this is the opposite of what Atmasphere first posted! The key is then whether pin 3 is left floating or not?I just picked up some of these;http://www.amazon.com/Hosa-GXM-133-Female-Male-Adaptor/dp/B00...

ahh yes thanks - understand now.presumably it is safer to simply split the RCA signal?Even if the manufacturer were to confirm it is okay to ground xlr pin 3, the buzzing would remain nevertheless?
cd player - xlr output buzzing
Hi Dave - thanks, too, but tried disconnecting everything except the cd player, preamp and speakers. Used the RCA output from the cd player, no probs. Used the XLR output, same issue. It seems like the preamp can't handly the XLR output of the cdp...

Thanks Al - the difficulty I'm having in finding any consistency to testing the problem is that when it is connected to the preamp, the buzzing is only at low volumes and sometimes even disappears after a minute or two. When I use the exact same co...

"Matisse" preamp - 12AX7 12AT7
don't have any : (simple as that - I'd probably rather try the attenuator than hedge my bets on a new tube after so much experimentation to get the correct sound and then perhaps not even get the correct reduction in gain!Feel free to talk me out ...
"Matisse" preamp - 12AX7 12AT7
Okay well, to report back, I tried it and it did not really change much at all!!I rolled in a few other sets of tubes to see if any differences could be noticed, and slightly less gain was apparent on the following combination;Brimar CV4004, GE JA...
"Matisse" preamp - 12AX7 12AT7
Okay that is good news, thanks guys. I will try it with a spare set of 12AT7 tubes (ie 4 12AT7 tubes) and let you know how it goes.
"Matisse" preamp - 12AX7 12AT7
hmm could be the source, but how do I test? I have only one source, one pre and one power amp...
"Matisse" preamp - 12AX7 12AT7
okay - ace. presumably I could run it with 4 matched 12AT7 instead, too. is there any danger to the circuit/power supply by running a non-specified tube? so many forums say yes, and and equal amount say no!
Should I Bi-Wire or Use Jumpers?
these days the argument appears to be the converse - is it in some way disadvantageous (besides the cost) to bi-wire? If we can't prove it is better, we need to show whether it is worse - if only to stop all the argument and hyperbole.
Anticables, Morrow Cables SP1 or PNF Cables
Thanks Dart - what system are you using? Do you mean anticables was like night and day > than your earlier cables, or that anticables was < than the morrows?
Should I Bi-Wire or Use Jumpers?
I notice some speaker manuals actually recommend bi-wiring their speakers - surely it is inadvisable to ignore something given in the guidelines of a product (presumably written by an engineer who has measured the tonal differences)?
Power amp for Quad 11L2
gee good suggestion - pricing on this model looks reasonable.is it a neutral sound?
