the smoothest sounding speaker
Here's one When the drivers like this have incredibly low distortion, and the design is well implemented, you get a non-fatiguing "listen all day" type of soundI think (as of today) driver distortion is my biggest detterent to enjoying the music. ...
How does one get off the merry-go-round?

Listen to the music, not the stereo. If the stereo does not let you do that you will never be free! Many audiophile components are voiced with a particular sound. This can be exciting at first but after a while the colorations get tiresome and it's...
Speaker audition: a novice’s journey
Hope Tannoy is on your list. They have some great speakers for under $15,000WestminsterYorkminster
Solid state recorders
Marantz's top of the line, $1,500 PMD 580 has pretty poor signal / noise ratio and dynamic range. Much worse than an average CDP.# Recording MP3 Bit-rate (Selectable)# Mono: 160, 128, 96, 64, 32 kbps# Stereo: 320, 256, 192, 128, 64 kbps# Sampling ...
Rawson Resale......
Rawson resale must be pretty good. While I don't know what others have paid, it appears people are asking more for the amps than what they bought them for. Sort of goes against what Tim is trying to do.Maybe he should open up a dealer network if t...
Solid state recorders
I spoke with Marantz and they now have an R-C 600 remote control for their PMD560/570/580. Also you can put in track markers and be able to skip from track to track. They rate their 2 gig flash (not SD) at 3 hours for standard 16 bit CD quality.Won...

Thanks for the observations. The technology looks like it has promise but maybe not there yet.
SS amp mosfet 'haze' - ever experienced this?

Best next step to upgrade sound?
The big $20K Snells are poorly designed IME but the small floor standers are a hidden gem. I heard the older $1,400 Snell E.5 and much, much better than Monitor Audio in the same room at Cosmophonic Sound in NYC. Had rear tweeter to even out room ...
battery powered with 'vivid' sound
Well, in that case, you need solar cellsand more solar cells my friend.
Best next step to upgrade sound?
Bradio7 have you listened to Snell D7 or Snell K7?I think the K7 is about a grand, not sure about D7. I was very impressed, albeit in dealers showroom. Sounded much, much better than KEF's.

Shazam, buy any amp you want and run it with this power inverter. However, I spoke with an amp mfg recently and he told me sealed lead acid batteries are notoriously noisy FWIW.
volume vs presence
"to gain more presence and percussive attack."I think the presence region is around 3,000 Hz. People here can correct me if this is wrong.Which is near the x-over region of your speaker Sometimes they put a dip in that region to cover up the blend...
The disappearance of the traditional amplifier
You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear and IME the recipe for success is find a speaker you like first and THEN make it active. Just because a speaker is active only gives the POTENTIAL for better performance, doesn't guarantee it.
