What portable CD player do you recommend?
iRiver makes great discman type players. Truly surprising and one with an optical out. Read review on headphones.com.
Help me put a system together for under $1k.
NAD L 40, JM Labs 705, you know the rest.
Neat cheap amp suggestions . Help me have fun.
Hafler 120 was best made by Hafler, never heard it modded though. It will beat all of the aforemetioned sonically. GAS Grandson by James Bigiorno was his best older amp, then he moved on to SUMO which is strong sounding but a bit harsh. Amber was ...
sonographe 120, is it worth having?
This is a slow amplifier with large tube bloom. If you like that sound then go for it. The GAS equipment you are running now is fairly harsh sounding, but quick with lots of amperage. You might consider a Hafler 120 which is quicker than the Hafle...
amber
I sold them back in the early 80s, decent preamp, amps were a better buy, but respectable.
Computer-based Multichannel
I'm lost here. I appreciate those who practice the art of active and passive listening on different levels, but when did it all become so quantitative and techno. Are there survivors and practitioners in the realm who actually load a disc or caref...
Creek 4040
Not sure what you mean by "older" models as that would be about 20 years old itself. The Creek 4040 was very solid in its sound delivering stable and enough current. It was/is British in sound, conservative with a rolloff in the highs. Bottom end ...
Portable CD player with Digital Output
Second the i-River. Have one without digital out and it has as just a player trounced separate players, no really. Can only imagine what the dig-out version will do.
Unwanted turntable signal
Thanks for the response. The platter is high density acrylic or glass with a felt mat on top so that doesn't work. Maybe something is not getting lubed after sitting for so long. Thanks again for the ideas.
Prima Luna 1/2 or 5 for Totem's Mite??
I would replace internal wiring first before going crazy with new amplification. Tube gear will certainly mellow the high end.
Unwanted turntable signal
Not a 60hz ground hum as that would be constant. The meters cycle up and down as the platter rotates but it is inaudible. Thanks for repsonse.
Audio using home computer
Peter,I really don't mean to whizz on your barbeque, but this is incompatible. I'm not being snobbish, just know and understand what downloaded music sounds like in comparison to well recorded source. If you go this route, certain upgrades need be...
VTL IT-85 or Mcintosh MA6500
Stick with the VTL. Unless Mac has made a significant turnaround I'm not aware of, it's hands down VTL is more musical.
Mom wants a shelf system or laptop speakers..
Second the Onkyo CS 210 $170 delivered, dump speaks for Mission m70 listed new on A'gon for $90 or Pardigm Atoms, so I count $180. Unscrew the top, drill 4 holes and mount under cupboards.
Best Choice for Docking Station for an IPOD
Bose, expensive for what it is? Really?! Arrrgggghhhh!!!!!Cello, I just recommended an Onkyo CS 210 shelf system to a friend for use with his iPOD. $170 shipping included and you are in. Consider replacing the stock speakers and speaker cable with...
