Which MM, MI, or Hi output...Nagaoka 300/500, Clearaudio Maestro, Soundsmith Carmen
"Moving Permalloy" - Nagaoka's term for the fact that they use an alloy instead of pure iron. Which is true for all MI cartridges, magnetic alloys being lighter than iron.
You've run some pretty fancy MC's, but the _______ MM cartridge really impressed me
Grado, Soundsmith, Nagaoka and London Decca are all MI. Of those, if londondecca.com don't start making cartridges again, I'd go for the Nagaoka MP-500. I haven't had anything higher than a Grado Statement 3, or a Soundsmith Sussurro MkII, but to ...
Honest question about cartridge vs. turntable performance.
Zombie thread alert!
Cartridge question
Surely the right answer is the one you like the best, and not what weirdos on the internet say?
Goodbye Everyone
I've always sold camera gear via ads on photo forums, or in the case of my serial Leica infatuations, back to the dealer just for convenience. Audio stuff I have given away, probably stupidly.
Cadenza Bronze on a Fatboy
I'm no Porsche owner, but I can say that my Kontrapunkt C, Cadenza Bronze and Cadenza Mono don't hit any records. Sure, I flatten really warped records with a well-known heating device. The only cartridge that really has an issue with warped recor...
Tonearms without anti-skate, damage to records?
True, all I can do is twiddle the dial as made and calibrated by SME, or the slider in the case of Rega. I use two arms from each, and setting them up this way conforms to PL’s method. Going by sound alone, I’d say that this setting or even less ...
What are the audio differences you hear with turntable Mats.
@bdp24 I’d just like to say how glad I am I spent the money for a Groovetracer Rega counterweight. The only way to get a Cadenza Mono to balance otherwise was to have the Rega weight half off the end of the tonearm, and a .50 calibre lead ball tap...
Tonearms without anti-skate, damage to records?
Has anyone performed Peter Ledermann's recommended AS method (set to permit slow centripetal progress on smooth vinyl) and compared the resulting AS force to standard recommendations? My experience with doing it on two or three cartridges is that ...
The best plug in filter ever!
I am assuming she was testing video completely blind, right? Blind test ABX? 🤦‍♂️😉😂🤷‍♂️ Even n=1 blind tests are effectively nullified by the (clever*) statement that it takes 45 minutes or so for the effect to be apparent. 45 minutes ruins ou...
Vintage turntable with a modern phono stage, is it worth it?
I'd say yes, in principle. Not everyone likes Thorens turntables, though I liked the one my father-in-law had just as much as his Linn LP12. There are an awful lot of excellent Garrard and Lenco tables out there too.
Is it possible for a high end manufacturer to overprice their goods?
Obviously, it is possible. Even the most expensive items are made of components that cost relatively little (thank goodness there is little place for precious metals and gemstones in hi-fi!) Does the manufacturer add enough design know-how, or des...
Tube Preamp with Solid State Amp?
I've done it with both a Copland CTA-301 and a Copland CTA-305, and later a Quad QC-24 pre-amp feeding a YBA-1 power amp. It's fine, better than an SS pre-amp in my view. But it doesn't sound like tubes. Eh? What do I mean? Well, I find a tube pr...
If it sounds 'great', everything is ok?
If you're happy, you're happy. That's probably a truism or some egregious and simplistic error to philosophers, but I'll stand by it. The only problem comes along when you want to compare your sound (and thus, your happiness) with that of others....
The Best Preamp is no Preamp?
I tried this in the late eighties, when I had a Mission PCM CD player that had a volume control on its remote. I had been playing this through a Musical Fidelity integrated amp, but just for fun one day, I got out its predecessor, the original NAD...
