Intermittent Left Channel Outage-- Older McIntosh System--Love my system appreciate Help!
Once you disconnect the speaker cables from the amplifier input of the relay then the relay has nothing to switch. It won't make a difference, but the point here is not to troubleshoot just the relay  but also the control circuit from the preamp t...
Intermittent Left Channel Outage-- Older McIntosh System--Love my system appreciate Help!
You have to start a process of elimination.... Did you disconnect the speakers from the control relay and connect the speaker cables directly to the amplifier?
Looking for 5AR4 rectifier tube most like solid state
The sonic signature of your preamp is mostly the 6SN7 tubes. Voltage sag is not an issue (I think) because those tubes maybe draw 5mA each idle and maybe swing to 10mA on full signal. So the highest plate current is about 80mA for all 8 tubes whic...
Power consuption of an amplifier
The transformer is a passive device, it literally passes voltage and current that is fed into it. A higher wattage transformer has thicker wires and is able to carry more current and therefore more power. If the transformer is undersized for the l...
Power consuption of an amplifier
In the US, when you plug an appliance into an outlet, that appliance cannot draw more than 1800 watts because the receptacle is rated at 15-amps. The closest equivalent power source is the 1500 watt transformer. Keep in mind the transformer watta...
Tube Amp recommendation for Thiel CS1.6 under $2k
I have the Thiel 3.6's and their low sensitivity and low 2.5 to 3 ohm impedance makes it a challenge for a tube amp -- but the one saving grace is the impedance is flat throughout most of the frequency range. Tough to find an excellent high power ...
Unplugging power cords from amps/ pre amps
Does the manufacturer specifically warn to unplug the power cord only at the receptacle and not at the equipment?  Since the power cord detaches at the equipment, it is reasonable to assume that some end users would find it more convenient to plu...
Crossovers? How do you evaluate if crossover is any good?
Speaker designers choose crossovers not on which is best but which is best suited for the job.
New DAC issues
The Gugnir is designed by one of the best digital engineers in the business whose company does not have a dealer and distribution network to take half of the sales price, so a price based comparison is not a good metric. Sure, there could be somet...
Vacuum Tube preamp with my KRELL KAV 250a, a no no......WHY?
Krell does not use coupling caps at the input which can result in problems if DC is leaked in from the preamp (both for the amp and speakers). The upside is better transient response as the signal is not impeded a constant charging and discharging...
A switch for 3 amps
Go with the Luxman AS-55. It uses heavy duty switching contacts which never get "dated". Most switches are rated for DC voltages, which is why a flimsy looking switch can be rated for (DC) 10 amps -- but pass a 10-amp AC voltage and it arcs the co...
Dedicated mains supply unexpected result
From what you're describing the amplifier is not working correctly  after the mains cable was replaced from the meter to the panel. Call the electrician back and explain the amplifier is not working correctly and can he please check over his work....
New expensive power cord for amp and no change in sound?
The price tag does not always reflect performance. If this is a major brand cord then more than half of the selling price can be dealer and distributor markup and the rest of the cord could be sourced from major manufacturers such as Belkin or Eat...
A stupid question(s) about power cords
1. It is to orient the plug correctly so the hot and neutral of the receptacle matches the hot and neutral of the equipment.   2. Not necessarily. The dummy ground pin almost never has a wire welded to it so it does not connect in any way to the...
To upgrade a separate power supply?
Depends on the voltage rating of the caps, what voltage is applied to the caps, and the ambient air temperature surrounding the caps.
