Why don't higher end amplifiers come with a separate power chassis?
A big reason is warranty servicing. Connection points are a leading cause of failure due to the mechanical stresses on the coupling and the connecting and reconnecting cycles, so there has to be a large benefit to cost ratio (and with a power amp ...
Isolation transformers output voltage higher than wall
What are you measuring with? There could be as much as a five to six volt difference between true rms multimeters and averaging multimeters when measuring wall voltage. All multimeters are accurate with a clean sinewave power but not with wall vol...

Insulation between floors - how affective?
Check first that this isn't a routine maintenance issue. Noise from circulating water could be air in the baseboard piping. You'll need to bleed and fill. Rumbling noise from a boiler could be a restriction in the chimney or flue, caused by soot (...
Still another question about biasing tube amps
Both the tube type and the amplifier topology (Class A or A/B). To keep it simple: it's maximizing power, minimizing distortion and maximizing tube life. From there the bias is a function of the plate voltage and impedance of the OPT primary. Whe...
Driver Testing - reduced output
Use a multi-meter to measure the resistance across the speaker terminals. Normally, the resistance should measure around 3 to 6 ohms. If both measure exactly the same in this range, it's probably not the crossover and instead a driver issue.
I have NOVA V's and I am not happy
Could also be the Sonus Fabers are reproducing the recording with all its warts. I have the same issue with my Thiel 3.6’s. On great recordings they are unbeatable; on poor recordings the performance better be great for me to tolerate. If you’re ...
Custom Tuning Conspiracy
The reason such a speaker company doesn’t exist is because there is no business plan or marketing for such a product. Or in plainspeak: it won’t make money. The main reason it won’t is because the consumer does not know a Thiel-Small parameter fr...
DC entering my amp?
What I would do is check for DC offset at the speaker terminal outputs. Set a DMM to DC Volts and measure across the speaker cables at the amplifier binding posts with the amp on (for at least 5 minutes) and everything connected as normal, all on....
Alta Vista NP-100 schematics?
There are things you can do in a pinch without a schematic. I would disconnect the output transistors on the same channel with the diode and with a multi-meter check the resistance across the pins. A shorted transistor is a common cause of burned ...
Wiggle kt170 base
Unless you swap the tubes in both sockets to see if the hiss stays with the tube or the socket, there is no way of telling if it is a bad tube or a bad mechanical connection. You could have a bad tube and it decided to show itself that day. Or you...
The difference between an Audiophile and a Stereophile?
If I built a great sounding speaker made out of plywood and roofing nails, would the audiophile buy it?
Perception and Watts: Doubling of power
Different frequencies consume different power so "twice as loud" would be frequency dependent in many cases. Paying for an additional 50 watts will improve low frequency performance -- you may not hear it louder but you will hear it cleaner with r...
Audio-grade rectifying diode?
Bypass any rectifier diode with a 0.047uF polypropylene cap and it becomes an audio grade rectifier.
Help and Advice Needed: Cary Audio SLP-05 Preamp RMA Disaster
With RCA inputs, does the volume fully mute? An attenuator does not necessarily mute at zero setting, it is at its maximum voltage divider impedance and a 0dBFS signal can be heard. I wouldn’t consider that to be a problem. I looked at Cary’s sp...
