DAC as an upgrade
Be careful with used DACs. Old Benchmarks had worse op-amps and other problems. Many companies like Benchmark and I am sure Bel Canto offer free trial at home (30 days in case of Benchmark) - you like it you keep it - if not send it back. Differen...
Capacitor log Mundorf Silver in Oil
Thanks Volleyguy. I'm in the process of replacing cheap aluminium dome Vifas with Morel Supreme 110. Now it needs playing time to soften but is already much cleaner (underhung motor). I will decide what to do after break-in and with new interconne...
DAC as an upgrade
Mapman - Many DACs these days have built in jitter reduction circuitry allowing to use anything as a transport. I use Benchmark DAC1 with sony DVD player using 75 Ohm coax. Toslink connects my TV to Benchmark and I have still have one more unused ...
Capacitor log Mundorf Silver in Oil
Volleyguy - I suspected average performance of Solens but I bypassed them (10% of the value) with REL Audiocap PPT Theta. My review says that they are "clinical" "bright" and "forward" sounding - probably the worst possible cap but your link says ...
Capacitor log Mundorf Silver in Oil
Volleyguy - thanks for the link. I don't want to invest too much money in caps since my speakers are temporary. I would probably leave Solens in place and upgrade bad sounding caps(according to review) Audiocap Theta (I use as a bypass 10% of valu...
Capacitor log Mundorf Silver in Oil
Volleyguy - if you don't know this already - on the web side www.humblehomemadehifi.com under Main menu there is "Cap test" where they test and describe sonic impressions of about 24 different caps - including Mundorof oil. I got Solen before read...
Newbie
I second the NAD for Paradigms. NADs are on the warm side while Paradigm is the cold one.
How many watts is my system using?
Mystang - "I'm using 6 amps when my system is playing music" something doesn't add up - If you use class A amp then your supply power is always the same with or without music but if your amp is class AB then your average power is in order of few w...
Rethinking Listening Fatigue
Cwlondon - Sheffield's Kodo Drums are very well recorded on CD - no need for vinyl here.
Wise audio aphorisms
It's bad when firefighters come too late (to your class A)but it's much worse when they come too early - Confucius
Rethinking Listening Fatigue
Shardone - you are absolutely right. They neglected quality and encouraged copying by setting prices too high. SACD, HDCD etc. are carrying much better copy protection but are way too expensive often with poorly mixed recordings.DVDs are sold in c...
Rethinking Listening Fatigue
It probably doesn't apply to your case but often amplifiers with very deep negative feedback sound fatiquing even if sound is not overly bright. After each impulse feedback is a little late and output transistors go to saturation and need a moment...
midrange forwardness
Chris - you can fix it to some degree with cables. When I read somebody's complain about pronouced lower midrange of Acoustic Zen Satori (Shotgun) speaker cables I bought them. Thats exactly what my small Icepower based amp needs. It added chestin...
Bel Canto Ref. 1000s,CD-2 what cables work best ?
I have Rowland Model 102 (smaller Icepower) and used to have AQ Indigo speaker cables. Since Icepower reviews complain about "not very round" sound (lower midrange) I selected speaker cable with a little pronounced lower midrange - Acoustic Zen Sa...
Loudspeaker 'Back EMF'
Kirkus - crossover is far from being perfect and Back EMF from tweeter to midrange or midrange to tweeter at the frequency close to crossover point (probably around 2.5kHz) gets thru. Amplifier's DF is limited at higher frequencies and cable induc...
