Can you touch the tubes?
Transistors was just coming into television sets when I started into electronics.  The only time we did not grab a tube with our bare finger was when it was hot.  We then used a cloth, napkin, paper towel... Couple funny story now.  Wasn't then. ...
Audiophilia: Is it the pursuit of audio excellence or just a desire to tinker.
Both.  In your search for "audio excellence", "tinkering" is one of the procedures.  Like changing the cartridge on your turntable.  May seem to be "tinkering" to most.  At $5,000, I would not call it, Tinkering.  Probably closer to Surgery.
Do you think driver “break in” is real?
Absolutely. We used to run across it all the time when I owned a stereo shop.  Brand new, sealed boxes from same shipment as our demo pair.   There was no doubt or question.
McIntosh C28 transistor subs
Wait for the part from McIntosh. If "any" transistor will do, I would expect Mc would have filled your order by now.  Weather be tightly spec'd or proprietary there is a reason for the wait. I personally would look up the transistor on Mouser, D...
At what price is one considered an Audiophile.
Audiophile is an illness.  Something you don't want to contract.  Like dealing with a disease, gets very expensive.  AND health insurance does not cover an Audiophiliac,  Sorry Steve.
Not sure if I have enough oomph.
OMG.  Only now, after spending $15,000 are you concerned about this?  Like purchasing a Ferrari and then thinking about the gas consumption and repairs. Well.... in a bit you will not have to 'THINK" about not having enough power or Ooomph.  Cros...
All Pre 1970 Vintage speakers suck! Prove me wrong
I don't know how old you are.  1970's was my "high school" era, I lived thru when you are speaking.  Writing, I will agree with you as All but a few were of today "Audiophile" standards.  ESL speakers as commented above I still highly regarded no...
Does anyone repair....
Ps.  I once wanted to make those again.  With modern day equipment,  And I have a friend in Colorado that might give your repair a go.
Does anyone repair....
I don't know of a repair shop closer to you.  But you don't have to send the whole console.  You will have to disassembled it.  Looking at the Owner's Manual, it pictures the Power Amplifier unit as separate from the radio/control unit.  Look at t...
What is your most fond musical memory.
This would have to be Vladimir Horowitz. Chicago, 198...5, 6? I can't remember the reason I would be in Chicago at that time.  Was not just for his concert.  Chicago Consumer Electronics Show is summer.  Why would I be there in the fall?
Amplifier and Speaker A/B switcher
Follow up.  Paul McGowen does not know of a solid state speaker selector switching module. I looked into them on ebay.  Including the TC-7220 2-Way Amp Amplifier  Speaker Selector Switch Switcher Splitter Combiner. Several things bothered me,  ...
Amplifier and Speaker A/B switcher
"swapping the speaker cables by hand" That's the way most of us do it. What about turning the amps around so the speaker connection are facing outward? How often do will you be doing this? If I had to do it again, I.would still go with a box, a...
After a long, long sleep: ML-335
It might not be a land mine but could be a soil your pants exciting experience.  Like expensive cars, the repairs are expensive too. I would definitely do an easy up on it.  Spend the money and send it to ML service center.  Or a reputable tech o...
Amplifier and Speaker A/B switcher
Depending on the concerning ear, everything you put into the signal path will degrade the sound. Years ago, I needed to do what you want.   But I needed to be able to switch 4 turntables, 6 amps/receivers, 2 aux and 12 pairs of speakers. Plus, sp...
ELEMENTS THAT AUDIOPHILE SPEAKERS REQUIRE
LOL!!! How they Look is high on my list.  If she looks pretty, I will overlook her misgivings.
