Power consuption of an amplifier
I would suggest at least double your amp's rating. If you can only afford double what your amp pulls.  Plug and play, fine.  Then there is the "Audiophile" zero impedance power delivery.  Which leads to, till your wallet and bank account bleeds ...
That Transformational piece of Gear We All Wish For
#2 It has always been clean, distortion free, solid, low impedance power right at my wall outlet. #1 I consider Myself, gear.  I wish I could not be sooo damn critical and just enjoy the music.  But I'm learning to turn it off and on.
Do you belong more to souce first or to speakers first school of thought ?
My Magnavox All In One came with speakers. I got dizzy (more than usual) when I dished out $172 at KMart.  I remember how proud I was pushing it out of the store, strapping it on my motorcycle and riding it home thru town.  Yeah.  Mine.  Eat you...
So, a reviewer just said something I need to talk about.
Number first for me is, I Have to Like the Music.  The performance.  Then, how it sounds and how my system reproduces it.  Yes.  I could nit pick the technical issues of my or "the system" and recording.  But I have a limit to how much "issues" I ...
Suggestions for testing a never installed, 20-year boxed amp.
I used a Variac and 2, 8ohm 10watt resistors on the output with volt meters across them.  Short the inputs.  Take the covers off.  As I easy up the variac, I watch the meters, sniff around and look for smoke.  Now I would use an infrared thermomet...
When Was The Audio Golden Age?
For me it was 70’s -90’s. I call it the Audio Center days. I recall 6 dedicated audio salons on Oahu. 2 "high end". Hanson’s place in Kahala and super underground Alston. Lafayette, Holiday Mart, Shirokiya and tv repair shops had their stereo corn...
Record player sounds out of tune and "wavy"
I also had a slipping mat problem.  I could stop the record spinning with slight finger pressure on the side of the record.  Slipped both record on the mat and mat on the platter.  I washed the mat and wiped down the platter. Could be a worn stre...
Audiophile Comedy
New dryer duct = Solid State sound.. Old lint crusted duct = Tube sound. Obvious to me, anotherbob prefers the softer tube sound and probably his clothes to be on the brighter crisper side.
(20 year old) 1.0 meter Kimber hero xlr and Audioquest diamondback xlr cables
I seem to recall a speaker cable tweak in the 70's, 80's.  Might work here.  One cable has good bottom end.  Lacks the top.  Another cable lacks bass but with great highs.  Parallel the two to gain the benefits of both.  Take apart and solder. We...
The molecular level explanation of "cable burn-in"
All the parameters in your equations are valid. Except Snake Oil. Might want to add the dampening of the conductors inside the cable.   When current flows through a cable it flexes.  A big air conditioning unit startup pulling 200 amps inrush.  An...
Please be gentle with me! 🙏
To answer your question, I feel going with something like a Bluesound Node N130 would offer better sound quality.  On the other hand, if he is Satisfied with his equipment situation and sound coming out of the speakers, I say all is good. Cross th...
Starting a Classical Vinyl Music Collection
Where to start?  Apply the same as CDs. Classical music?  Gosh.  Sooo much to choose.  Genre.  Composers, Orchestras, Conductors, solo artist, style,,,,,, Movies!  Honestly, I don't like ALL of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven... scores.  I have favorites...
Right angle XLR adapter
There are 90 degree xlr adapters.  This one is Adjustable.  Search eBay item number:  373980982037 Usually, the #3 pin is located on the bottom of the receptacle in the unit.  Also, the #3 pin is in the direction of the 90 degree bend.  Which ma...
What to do with dead equipment
Intermittent problems are the hardest to troubleshoot.  25 years of trouble-free use is good.  Probably retubing should have been done anyway.  About time to renew the capacitors too.  Either spend for repairs or spend for another.  This hobby is ...
