Music with Titles that get you to think
Rufus’ mother was Kate McGarrigle.  Kate and her sister Anna recorded some terrific folk oriented albums.  I particularly like their self-title “kate and Anna McGarrigle” album.  Isn’t Martha Rufus’ sister?
Recommendations for a jazz record which demonstrates vinyl superiority over digital
As mentioned above, the direct to disc recordings by Sheffield Records, like Harry James’ “king James Version”  M&K direct to disc—Bill Berry Allstars “For Duke” (covers of Duke Ellington); Earl Hines—“Fatha” Clark Terry “Alternate Blues”  ...
Recommendations for a jazz record which demonstrates vinyl superiority over digital
Because Columbia was a big label, a lot of their records are out there making them cheaper to acquire a first run pressing.  Whatever the reason, perhaps degradation of the master tape, some of the great Columbia first issues are better sounding t...
Paul Speltz Zero-Box Autoformer With Tenor OTL
I’ve not heard an auto-former on any speaker so I don’t know how it sounds.  But, I too am skeptical about putting a transformer on an OTL.  Ideally, OTLs would be used with higher impedance speakers, so I can see why someone without the right spe...
Paul Speltz Zero-Box Autoformer With Tenor OTL
Mike, I think you are talking about a linestage or passive volume control, including transformer/autoformer volume controls, whereas the original poster is inquiring about an autoformer inserted between the amp and speaker to reduce the output im...
???What's The LEAST Expensive "End Game"Amplifier You've Ever Heard???
Jim2, I am a tube person, but, I like Ayre for solid state; your recommendation is very good.
Tube Amp or Tube Pre Amp
I would try a tube integrated amp.  An integrated amp is often not that much more than a power amp.  With some amps, the integrated amp is essentially a power amp with input jacks, selector knob and a volume control.
???What's The LEAST Expensive "End Game"Amplifier You've Ever Heard???
For me the least expensive amp I could live with is the Synthesis A40 (costs around $8,000); if I needed more power it would be their A100 amp.  Both have built in DACs I could live with.  The power amp I currently operate costs about 8.5 times th...
List Of Small Company Tube Amps
One of my favorite tube amp makers is Synthesis.  They consistently make amps whose sound is WAY beyond one's expectation for the price.  My two favorites of their lineup are the integrated amp/DAC combination--A 40 (twin KT66 tubes pwer channel) ...
Tube Amp or Tube Pre Amp
By far, the most important choice is the right amp for the particular speaker.  The sound of the system will be primarily determined by the amp-speaker matchup.  If you want to hear what tubes can do for the sound, start with the proper tube amp f...

I don't know why, but I actually own a copy of that Firesign Theater album.
Music with Titles that get you to think
Yes, I agree on your Mars Volta preference; I just like the name of “De-loused.” There are some names that strike me as odd or contrary to expectations, such as Sam Cooke’s great civil rights anthem “A Change is Gonna Come.”  The name and lyrics ...
Music with Titles that get you to think
I can think of two somewhat depressing titles.  One is Mars Volta’s “De-loused at the Comatorium” (hard to think of a more degraded human condition) and the Gorillaz’s “Laika Come Home.”
XLO Signature and Reference Interconnects
How old are these cables?  In their day, many years ago, XLO made some very good cables.  The best of them remain good to this day.  I still have and use an XLO Limited cable in my system.
Silver spades
Silver is a better conductor than gold or copper.  Gold is often plated onto other metals because plating is cheap and gold does not oxidize.  Silver oxidizes, but, silver oxides are quite conductive too (though not as much as pure silver), so it ...
