3 Top Cartridges Picks
I have a Lyra Titan in a Basis Vector arm and this combination sounds terrific. According to a test record, this combination is just inside of the ideal range for mass/compliance compatibility. This combination brings so many records to life, both...
Best single-malt Scotch...
For the money, the 16-year Lagavulin is pretty good. But, of the Islay Scotches, my favorite, so far, is a 30 year old Laphroaig. I like that strong burnt peat and Iodine taste (okay, some say it has the hint of the ocean, I say it tastes a bit lik...
Totem hawk or Gershman Chameleon?
Were the flagship speakers sharing the room with some audiophile newsletter and a power conditioner company? If this is the same room, I agree, the set up was not good. However, I very much liked the other Gershman set up which had their model 82...
Digital as good or better than YOUR analog?
Nope, not yet. But, then again, my SCD-1 is not in the same price league as my Basis Debut V vacuum table/Vector arm/Lyra Titan set up. In most of the things that matter to me -- musicality, clear harmonic structure, scale of soundstage, natural d...
Isolation Platforms vs spikz on spkrs: Wilson WP7?
For my speakers, S.A.P. J2001, I prefer using a platform, specifically, a Symposium Svelte shelf. The entire bottom of the speaker sits on the shelf (no spikes), which in turn sits on carpet over wood flooring. I've also heard the Svelte Shelf use...
Sonus Faber Amati Homage versus Vandersteen 5A
Boy, why do we get such dust-ups every time someone mentions "time aligned." As far as I am concerned, time aligned means the music sounds like early 19th century when playing Beethoven and the 1960's when doing Allman Bros. What difference does t...
Which Solid-State Preamp under $7,000.00 New?
I like the Placette Active very much. It projects a large soundstage with clear delineation of all instruments in that soundstage. I also think it really gets the dynamics right. My only real issue is a touch of hardness and a kind of chill I get ...
CES 2004 Best of Show
By far, for me, it was the Halcro/Wilson room that impressed me. I don't think it was the equipment so much as the multi-channel recordings of classical music that was recorded by, and presented by Peter McGrath. I have never heard a recording of ...
What is your most beautiful component?
For no particular reason, my components range from truly hedious (S.A.P J2001 twin speakers) to merely bizzare (Levinson Ref. No. 32 preamp). I suppose the best looking componets are my Basis Debut V turntable and the Sony SCD-1 CD/SACD player.
VPI HW19 MkIII vs. Michell Gyrodec?
Is the MkIII suspensionless? I had a Mk IV and it had a stiff suspension. I find that a stiff suspension is a plus where isolation of the table is less than ideal. A lightly sprung table like the Michell can be hell when it comes to footfall probl...
Any Levinson owners/critics out there?
I have a Ref. No. 32 preamp (includes phono stage). In terms of flexibility and ease of use this thing is hard to match (very similar to BAT linestage in this respect). I initially thought the .1db volumes steps was silly, but when one is fine tun...
VA: Anybody in southern VA interested in an audio club?
I live in Northern Va. (Alexandria). I know a couple of crazies here that would probably be interested.
The best speaker you ever heard?
Best commercial speakers I've heard are the S.A.P. J2001 (with twin 12" woofers), which is why I purchased them. These speakers have a small Onken cabinet for the woofers, a horn midrange that is poised on top of the woofer cabinet, and a Fostex b...
Stylast compatibility ZYX cartridges
If you are really concerned about excess fluid somehow getting into the suspension of the cartridge, what you can do is use the applicator to brush the fluid onto the black handled brush that comes with the Stylast. Then use the brush to apply the...
