$500 (or less) CD players to mate w/ Marantz PM8004 & Vandersteen 2C
i'd keep your cd player, which is old school but should do fine as a transport, and add a dac--something like a mf v-dac or cambridge dacmagic would be a noticeable uprgrade
What's in your CDP tonight? the minority report
pernice brothers, "dimmest star" --one of the purtiest (and certainly saddest) songs of the last 20 years. chris whitley, "terra incognita"--a lot of this reccord drifts off into the ozone (i prefer his tighter acoustic stuff), but "weightless" is...

notorious byrd brothers--their best by a margin, despite the near-absence of gene clark (who according to mcguinn did write the miscredited "get to you") and losing crosby halfway through (he supposedly felt slighted at the inclusion of the carole...

teenange fanclub, "i was beautiful when i was alive"--a really strange, brooding tune by their brooding guitarist, raymond mcginley, whose songs are less immediately grabbing than his bandmates', but are ultimately more interesting.the jam, "in th...
Tell Us about an Album That Took a Long Time to Grow on You
surprisingly, it took me a while to grasp nirvana's nevermind--when i first heard it, it sounded overpolished and overtly commercial, as if to sanitize a punk band for mass consumption. i still have issues with the production (much preferring the ...

i'm still using the cobalts in my bedroom system--as auxinput states, the cc800 pops up regularly on ebay (you can use the function which notifies you when one is listed). the cobalt line (which i've always liked) does have a different signature t...
Whats playing on your system today?
paul kelly, comedy--very smart melodic folk/rock on the order of neil finn or freedy johnson, but with the punky verve of early kinks. huge in australia, fwiwchris stapleton, from a room--a country record for people (like myself) that don't always...

nirvana, "frances farmer"--what a brilliant song
RIP Chris Cornell
i'm decidedly in the minority, but i think his bond theme (from casino royale) was the second best ever (goldfinger being of course the ultimate). from what i read he suffered from depression, which led to drink/drugs, but was sober of late. all v...

the hollies--midas touch. their own songwriting is kind of spotty, but graham gouldman is one of theĀ  unsung songwriters of all times and the drummer is surprisingly greatgo betweens--before hollywood. everyone should run out and buy at least two ...

80's iconic artists
gbv/pollard is ridiculous--i just checked and in their various incarnations he's released over 110 unique lps and eps plus countless singles, scores etc. (over 2000 songs). what's surprising is that almost all of the (probably too many) i've heard...
Tune of the Day
thanks ruebent--great cover. i can't find the album on spotify, but i think i have it on cassette somewhere and will dig it up. as payback, i'll recommend the pernice brothers, overcome by happiness--sorta big star melodicism crossed with brian wi...

I love Hitchcock too, but he's another guy that puts out too many records. His latest, BTW, is vg
