Of all the components I roll, changing preamps is perhaps the most jarring and hard to accept once I get used to an incumbent preamp. It’s all the subtle cues and nuances a preamp has that adds up to define their DNA of sound. I can change amps an...
Too Much Gain the Issue ? (preamp and amp)
Preamp tubes are optimized- all spots have early 50’s Sylvania 6SN7 GTA. Smooth as glass. Tried putting the EH, Ken-Rad and Raytheon in and no help. OK, that's fair and sorry I doubted you! I have 1950s Sylvania 6SN7GTA in my collection, and c...
Too Much Gain the Issue ? (preamp and amp)
You have a tube preamp and I am the only one advising you to roll those tubes 😂 I believe these preamps ship (at least they used to) with Electro Harmonix tubes which are great to liven up a dull/dark system but could very well be a bad match in ...
Recommend a good tube power amp in the 100 wpc range for under $4k
I'm not a fan of the Raven amp aesthetics (looks like a run of the mill Chinese amp to me), but I do remember that 6L6GC kind of sound (vintage Heathkits - 5881 and 7581A) sounded absolutely wonderful with my 93dB Tannoy Kensington. Classic tube s...
Too Much Gain the Issue ? (preamp and amp)
24dB is an awful lot of gain for a preamp. 26dB is sort of a surprisingly high gain for a 30 Watt SS power amp. Yeah, that might not be the most optimal match - but the volume attenuator on the preamp should keep the amp's input stage from getting...

I currently have a pair of VAC 200iQ and Rogue Apollo Darks (along with my solid-state Phison A2.120SE). That's an upscale analogue of the Phi 200 versus a Rogue Stereo 100. The Rogue will be more dynamic and have better bass. The VAC will be more...

Yep same. Main system rotates: 2 great preamps, 3 great amps, 2 main phono stage, several carts and a few main SUTs. Two sets of speaker cables with slightly different voices. That’s before we even get into tube rolling. But just one pair of speak...
Liquid Stylus Cleaners
Perfectly safe imo, if used with care. It’s not necessary to use after every side. And just hit the Diamond stylus with liquid; obviously it’s not good to douse the cantilever or undercarriage. If the glue dissolves from a quality stylus cleaner t...

Rogue Stereo 100 with a 93dB Tannoy or Fyne will be pretty bomb. It will give you all the bass slam and dynamics, so you shouldn’t miss that from SS :) Throw some sweet NOS small tubes in there to get a good balance of tube & SS archetypes. Ro...

As others pointed out, gain matching will be an issue. In most cases, tube amps will have higher gains that SS amps of the same power rating. Sometimes MUCH higher. This is because they use less feedback, and also the typical input tubes like 12AX...
SUT - electrical theory and practical experience
@billstevenson  I definitely share your philosophy! It's analog. It's meant to be beautiful, not "perfect".
SUT - electrical theory and practical experience
Your statement means that you like sound full of developed COLORATIONS/DISTORTIONS. @rauliruegas  - and I'm OK with that 😁 I'm definitely not trying to pose as someone in pursuit of the "ultimate truth" in sound. I go for what pleases me the mo...
SUT - electrical theory and practical experience
"One practical consideration is you really need a very short, low capacitance run of cable from SUT to phono stage." Which is a good reason for having a high quality SUT built in to the phono circuit, on board. @lewm - That’s somewhat true. It’...
SUT - electrical theory and practical experience
I’m a SUT + LOMC fan. I just like the sound many (most?) SUT’s provide - rich, meaty, weighty. In my system, that’s the right direction - other systems may differ. I have an Audio Research Reference 3SE with a really great JFET MC stage. In the pa...
Why do Tube Amps sound more romantic v SS amps
I have heard that most speaker designs are built to deal with solid-state amplifiers. Add that buying a tube amp does not flourish with modern day speakers. Wish I could recall specifics as to why this is. Maybe someone else does. When you see ...
