Converting Vinyl to Digital
I use the MusicHall PA 2.2 ADC running into Audactiy. The PA 2.2 can handle line inputs or either MM or MC phono cartridges. It's an excellent piece of gear and Audacity is very versatile and free. I use it primarily to digitize the many reel-to-r...
8 Reasons why you should buy an $50,000 DAC
$50k for a DAC? That's simply absurd.
Wasted Years.
My goal over 50 years has been to build a system that makes the most of the music to which I listen. Yes, I love the gear and have had a lot of it over the years, but always with the anticipation that this purchase will bring me closer to my goal ...
God, I hate to ask this…
I recently was diagnosed with "Myelodisplasia (MDS) with TP53 gene mutation and 'chromosomal abnormalities.'" The MDS usually turns into acute leukemia. I've been given between five months and a year. Compared to many of you, I have a modest syste...
Why so many B & W Speakers on the used market?
At least the recent ones, often sound great in the showroom. But live with them for a month and they become screechy and unbearable. That's been my experience.
A Low Cost Pleasant Sounding Used CD Player?
I had a couple NAD CD players and have enjoyed them over the years. The last one I had was C 525 BEE. You should be able to pick up one pretty inexpensively.
The Hi Fi Audio Quest: circa late 1950s
Parents had a big 1947 Magnavox console radio-phono: AM/SW with separate FM tuner; Webcor record changer; 15" field-coil woofer and ginormous horn tweeter (of course, the speakers were directly below the changer). When I was 17, the electronics ga...
Masimo gives up.
Think about all the mis-matches: Singer Sewing Machine bought KLH and trashed it; Teledyne bought Acoustic Research and trashed it; Tyco bought Dynaco and trashed; Emerson Electric bought Fisher Radio and then sold it to Sanyo who trashed Fisher'...
Harman To Acquire B&W, Denon, Polk And Marantz From Masimo In $350 Million Deal
I'd watch for some brand discontinuation. Boston Acoustics is already moribund. Denon and Marantz pretty much compete against each other; I'd guess Marantz will be the survivor. JBL has become so all encompassing, I'd say Polk is on a short leash....
What is a "reference" system?
Frankly, it's whatever you say it is. For some people, it could be the $1 million dollar system at AXPONA that featured the new $395k Wilson Audio XVX speakers. For someone else, it could be an NAD 3020 driving a pair of Dayton Audio Classic C65 s...
Your Favorite Room at AXPONA 2025?
Best room I heard - PS Audio with the new PMG Signature gear. Most disappointing - Wilson Audio XVX: for a cool million for the system, I expected something exceptional. Didn't hear it. Enjoyed the WATT/Puppy system much more. Most surprising - ...
What are the most balanced relatively neutral cartridges at each price level ?
Save your money. Look at the Audio-Technica AT-VM95ML or the Goldring E4. Fabulous sound from both. Not fancy but they do the job really nicely.
Anyone hear the new PS Audio PMG Signature 512 DAC at AXPONA or otherwise?
I heard the system with the FR5 (stand-mount speakers). Couldn't get over the great sound quality. Had the chance to meet Paul McGowan and told him if I could afford it, I'd take that system home.
Chinese DAC's
Skip the Chinese products. Look into Geshelli Labs' units.
Picking speakers 3000-5000 budget
Vandersteen 2ce Signature III''s are very good - very natural sound. Need some space around them Focal Vestia No.3 - Outstanding sound for the price.
