Weak Link in Vinyl Playback Based on my experience, get rid of the Audio-Technica. Pop for an Ortofon 2M Blue or a Sumiko Oyster "Moonstone" or "Wellfleet" and I imagine your problem will go away. I spent some time with the A-T and was underwhelmed. To me, it sounded listles...
So This Really Is The End.... Not every bricks-and-mortar record store is on the way out. I just visited a new spot in Portland, OR's Sellwood neighborhood called "The Record Pub." They've been in business since July '22 and sell vinyl and cassettes (of all things) - a good se...
I feel it is time to upgrade my 1977 system....... Try the Rogue Audio Sphinx v3. Tube front end; solid-state power amp. Easy to afford at $1,700. More power than you'll ever need for your Altecs, It has a rather warm sound itself so it might be too much for your speakers. Alternatively, I'd look...
Is soundstage DEPTH a myth? In my case, it's all about speaker position. Or rather, the position of my listening chair in relation to the speakers. If I'm a foot too far out or a foot too far in, the soundstage suffers. Sit in the right spot, and magic happens. So, I'm a fir...

Did the Old Receivers Sound Good? RE: Sherwoods are sleepers AMEN! My first decent piece of gear was an S-7600 receiver - fabulous FM section and good sounding, if modest, power output. Used it for 10 years. Later had a bedroom/office system based on an S-7310 - another fine p...
Turntable question; Does Audio Technica make any good turntables? Yes. I liked the AT-LP7 when I had the chance for a long-term audition. It comes with a mid-line VM520EB MM elliptical cartridge for $849, however, I'd upgrade to the 540ML micro-line stylus for $209. It's quite a decent listen. Another great tur...
5 Dumb Things Audiophiles Believes. He is pretty bombastic in his presentation but in most cases, I agree with his points. Not so sure about his "PRaT" spiel but he certainly has the right to his opinion. I found it mildly informative and entertaining.
8-Tracks and Open-Reels: Who’s Got ‘Em and Whatcha Got? An Akai GX-620 4-track/7.5 & 3.75 ips TASCAM 32B 2-track/7.5 & 15 ips About 10 pre-recorded reels plus another 25 of mostly Top 40 radio air checks from the 60's and 70's. Plus, several unopened reels of Maxell UD 35-90 tape No 8-track...
Turntables Do yourself a favor: check out the Music Hall Stealth. $1650; comes with an Ortofon 2M Blue but features interchangeable head shell; on the fly adjustable VTA; direct drive and auto-stop. I'm sure a lot of folks will say it's too cheap to be any ...
Apt Holman preamp: can balance Phono 1 but not Phono 2 I agree - the Apt is a great preamp. Better than the younger Linn it replaced. Had the unit recapped just after I bought it a few months back and that definitely improved the sound. Thanks for the tip. That's stuff I can do without being scared...
Budget Phono preAmp I heartily recommend the Moon 110LP V.2. It is a gem - far better than the Schiit Mani, which I've also tried in my system. The Mani is grittier sounding while the Moon is much more musical.
ls FM radio even listenable any more? If you like Classical music, here in the Rust Belt Renaissance city of Dayton, OH, we have a fabulous Classical station network 88.1/89.9/89.1. Their on-air ID is "Discover Classical" (DiscoverClassical.org). They are music 24/7/365. And, they use... |
