When to recap a late nineties Krell Kav 250 A. If it is working and sounding fine, leave it alone! I have many vintage amps that are still working and have yet to have any caps fail!
where best to spend $2-3000 upgrade dollars in my system My Ohm Sound Cylinders don't seem to require much power (Carver TFM 15CB) and sound fine at low volume. I am really impressed by the "holographic" effect they produce even when placed poorly in a room. Unlike ANY conventional box speaker!

Amp for Amphion Argon 3s I recommend a pair of Spread Spectrum Technology Ampzilla 2000's! The last and final design by the late James Bongiorno. There is an excellent review in The Sensible Sound!
Transcendent Grounded Grid vs Foreplay III Wow! Ten years and NO responses! I know of the Transcendent Grounded Grid preamp from reading about it years ago. Most every tube preamp uses a grounded cathode (resistor and cap) for bias. I don't know if grounding the grid instead has any benef...
Grounded phono interconnects Be sure to run a ground wire from the TT ground to the Phono Box ground! This is to eliminate hum. I do the same on my Pioneer TT.
Grounded phono interconnects Yes, you can simply swap cables! My Pioneer PLX1000 has the same RCA jacks on the back. It did come with a nice high quality IC - which I replaced with an AudioQuest Silver Extreme to match my other IC's!
Vintage Carver I still have a TFM 15 used with my KLH Nines and Ohm Sound Cylinders. Working and sounding fine!
First Tube Amp Will Vincent of Idaho makes some superb tube amps - both PP and SE! I have one of his SE 45's! Great sound and build quality but limited power output (1.75 watts!). Works well with my vintage Klipsch Heresy's!
Does anyone know what happened to SUMO Electronics? I have an original Athena and Andromeda from when James Bongiorno ran the company. After he left later versions may not have been as good! Sumo closed long before James died!
Aleph 4, or else? (good general purpose class A amp) I recommend any of the Bedini amps: 25/25, 45/45, 100/100 and 150/150. I own the first and the last! Superb Class A sound from the late John Bedini! Competitive with the best and most expensive amps today!
First Tube Amp How about a nicely restored Dynaco Stereo 70? A classic PP design using pairs of EL34's, 5AR4 rectifier and a pair of 7199's. And GOOD iron! Probably the most popular tube amp ever (500,000 made!). I own two: a new input board version and a full-c...
where best to spend $2-3000 upgrade dollars in my system Your Klipsch Cornwall's are the limiting factor in your system. How about a new pair of Ohm Walsh's for $3K? Easy to setup and 3D imaging from ANYWHERE in the room! A sadly overlooked brand! I own a pair and they are competitive with ANY multi-kil...
Good Direct Drives Why would anyone want to spend $4000 on the new Technics 1200G when the Pioneer PLX1000 is comparable in every respect?!!! |
