Moving coil VS moving magnet/iron Regarding stylus "jitter": this does not exist! Mc cartridges have a rubber damping block at the opposite end of the cantilever. This takes care of vibrations traveling up the cantilever - so no vibrations reflected back down the cantilever!
Moving coil VS moving magnet/iron Moving coils have a much lower noise floor (especially when used with a transformer). And superior (faster) transients (far lower inductance). The coil mass is also insignificant in the low-output versions.
Whats on your turntable tonight? Procul Harum - Shine On Brightly. Original A&M pressing from 1968. Still an astonishing listening experience! Next up will be A Salty Dog!
Repair Vintage Bang &Olufsen ? I assume you have a B&O linear-tracker. Get it restored and working properly! I have two. One (8003) working and the other needing repair. These are great sounding classic TTs! Worth preserving as I doubt they will ever be manufactured again.
Pat Travers fans unite!!! I saw Pat Travers opening for Robin Trower at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY back in 1991. What a great show put on by two great guitar players! Both bands in top form! Smokin' guitars burning up the house! I now own several LPs by PT!
Clipping +1 bsmg! Loud rock (Zeppelin, Sabbath, ZZ Top ...) is recorded and meant to be played back LOUD! Sounds like you are clipping your amp. More power needed - or more efficient speakers!
Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC with Ortofon 2M Red Cartridge: BASS sounds 'muddy' The Reason? +1 noromance! The Schiit Mani, along with a better cartridge (Denon 103R) would be a considerable upgrade! Along with better isolation of the TT. And don't forget the record weight (better coupling of the LP to the platter)!
Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC with Ortofon 2M Red Cartridge: BASS sounds 'muddy' The Reason? LP bass varies from great to awful! Try some of the Sheffield Lab LP's as a reference. Particularly the Track Record.
How many amps? Here are three I have on hand in my collection: Perreaux 2150B, modded Dynaco ST70 and First Watt F7 (Tim Rawson clone). All three bases covered!

About to purchase Bryston BP-2MM moving magnet phono stage for Sondek LP-12 The Bryston phono stage is excellent! I have a Bryston .5 preamp in use with a Pioneer PLX1000 TT and Denon 103R mc cartridge. Step up is a Bellari mc transformer. This combination sounds particularly fine!
New silversmith fidelium cable What is the cost per foot of this wonder wire?
Stax Long Tonearm UA-70 Yea or Nay The slight advantage a 12" arm has in tracking error is not worth the extra cost and hassle mounting it!
Excellent sounding cd/sacd players on the used market. Replacement laser assemblies are still available for the Marantz players. |
