room size question.
Yes, most loudspeakers today need to be pulled out from the wall. 3 feet is a good starting place. A 12X12 room is big enough to get a great sound stage but you'll have to work to get the best set-up.
New to vinyl question
Set the tracking at 2 grams, and play a Stanley Clark album. Hendrix and Cream are not the reference standard for good sounding records.
System set up in front of corner Vs flat wall - acoustical issues?
Corner layouts usually work pretty good, even better if you move the speakers forward and the TV back.
To Tube or not to Tube, that is the question
To tell you the truth, your Sphinx is getting you 99% there. Tube gear takes a few more bucks to own and operate and you'll need some really nice tube friendly loudspeakers to go with the tube amps. My favorite tube set-ups featured Triangle floor...
Best Basic CD Player (no SACD, USB, etc.)
There are good players in every price range. Look on Amazon, a few very affordable name brand players that will sound really good.
How long does it take a decent quality speaker to "wear out"?
Loudspeaker materials usually don't last forever but it's hard to wear out most speakers.
Should I upgrade my Advent 5002 speakers?
Should I upgrade my Advent 5002 speakers? Yes, you should.
Compact ~20WPC Tube Amp
Another vote for Quicksilver.
Why are so many Infinity IRS beta systems for sale the past year ?
Well, the Infinity ribbon drivers have their own unique sound but after 40 years of listening I moved on to something else.
what size magnepan
I'd go LRS in a corner setup. I did that with my MMGs and it worked pretty good. The 1.6s were too big for the room and I could not get them to work. I own the .7s but I thought my MMGs were better.
Vacuum Tube Break-in
Burn-in yes.
Hesitant to upgrade my phono cartridge
Maybe a nice Grado.
Are solo efforts ever better?
Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, and maybe Mark Knopfler.
Just a few words of appreciation for a still living artist.
Lightfoot tours every winter (it gets cold in Toronto). Better go soon, he’s not getting any younger. My brother was in a band with his keyboard player in the 60s, he’s still in the band and touring(the keyboard player not my brother).
Tube amps and a Stradivarius
If tube microphonics are present, it is a problem not a feature.
