A good Budget CDp
A used Music Hall CD-25 can be had for between $300 and $400. I'm very impressed with the sound.
Best small, easy to carry, music system
Same idea, but I thought the Cambridge Soundworks Model 88CD, now discontinued but replaced by the Model CD 740, sounded better and looked better than the Bose, and was cheaper. The company has exceptional customer service, as well. Here's a link t...
Referrence music....
A CD that's really useful is Holly Cole's "Temptation." I will do a great job of testing how your system handles female vocals, piano, bass (acoustic) and silence.

When I was auditioning new speakers a few years ago every shop I went into played Jennifer Warnes "Somewhere, somebody" from her "Hunter" CD so I've kept using it for that purpose. It also works well to convince your friends they should upgrade th...
Receiver for Vienna Acoustics - Haydn
I've been very impressed with the Rotel 1050 for the price, $800.
downsizing, anyone recommend speakers 1000 or less
Soliloquy 5.0's
Is psb alpha intro match w/ sony str-de685
I agree the psb's are nice speakers for the money, I had a pair of Alpha Mini's that worked well with an inexpensive Denon receiver. For just a little more money there are a lot of used options that would sound better. I've bought both B&W 303...
New vs Used when buying please share thoughts
Good information in the above posts about doing whatever you can to get to know the seller, preferably through asking a few questions in person. One thing I'd like to amplify upon is the risk of shipping. I've had very good luck in finding wonderf...
Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, Joe Ely, Guy Clark
if Guy Clark piqued your interest and you don't already have it, find a copy of "Old No. 1," his first CD (I think.) There are several songs that other people made famous, L.A. Freeway, Desperados, and guest performances by a lot of good people, J...
Best redbook player under $5oo
The Music Hall CD-25 is pretty sweet. If you're willing to buy used you can get it for less than $500. It's $600 new.
under $300 bookshelfs: does excitement exist?
Another vote for the B&W 303's and, if you can find them, the Ruark Epilogue for that price used is another level up.
Soliloquy 5.3 vs Monitor Audio Silver S8
I'm not sure this is useful since I don't have direct experience with that particular Monitor Audio model but, for what it's worth, I own Soliloquy 5.0's and previously owned Monitor Audio model 14's. I've auditioned the Soliloquy 5.3's and a coup...
Thiel speakers... one more try
I had a pair of Thiel 2.2's matched with a McCormack DNA 0.5 Deluxe and TLC-1. It's an excellent combination, very dynamic and exciting. The McCormack drove the Thiels effortlessly at any volume I was comfortable with in a large living room.
Pre-amp to combo with Mccormack DNA 0.5
JmabeYes, I definitely use both the passive and buffered outputs of the TLC-1 simultaneously. The passive go to the DNA 0.5 and the buffered to the line-level inputs of an HSU sub. It's worked perfectly like that for more than a year. I'll check t...
Pre-amp to combo with Mccormack DNA 0.5
I've got a DNA 0.5 Deluxe and use it with a TLC-1 with great results. The TLC has two outputs, one passive and one buffered. I connect the passive outputs to the 0.5 and the buffered to an HSU sub. Sounds wonderful. You should be able to find a us...
