room treatment gurus, please
Get the book and make a call to the author; he's very accommodating with his expertise: Get Better Sound by Jim Smith
SACD Players
I've had the McIntosh MCD85 for two years and am really pleased with the CD and SACD performance.  Not sure if the retro MCD chrome will match your set up but it is a classic look. One thing to note; the availability of SACDs is limited; several ...
Integrated Amps
I went from a Marantz PM8005 to a McIntosh MA352. A big change in budget, but the 200w hybrid integrated really paired well with my Dynaudios.  Since upgrading I'm not wanting for power, bass, details and soundstage. The MA352 does have dual subwo...
McIntosh Tube Amp will not come on.
One more thought; try doing a factory reset.  You'll lose custom settings but that may do the trick.
McIntosh Tube Amp will not come on.
I've had a MA352 for three years without any issues.  I have called McIntosh support for questions and they were very helpful and responsive.  You'll speak with a tech not a call center front person.
If Steely Dan had a different vocalist
Nice find; listening to their Friday album. I definitely hear strong Steely Dan influence, but not early SD more like 2000s Two Against Nature SD or Gaucho album. Slick and jazzy rock with cool lyrics. Songs play like a cover of "Gaslighting Annie...
If Steely Dan had a different vocalist
Thanks for the suggestion; I saw a news story on MH and didn’t think much but now I will check them out. But when I think of Steely Dan, I don’t think greatest hits (even though they had many) and don’t think live performance. I see them as progr...
Are Marantz and Bowers & Wilkens becoming pawns in Masimo's internal fight?
I think there’s few comments because I offered a poorly constructed question. My interest in this topic and Masimo was partly past experience consulting at a medical device company and wondering if the marriage of medical devices and consumer elec...
Marantz SA10 sacd player
@immatthewj  yikes!  Didn't know SA10 was $7k must have confused it with the 30N at $3K.  There you go I saved $ by getting a McIntosh 😉, never thought that would happen.
Marantz SA10 sacd player
I have the solution; spend more!  I bought the McIntosh MCD85 SACD player.  My logic was that it would open up my options on SACD and revive my CD collection. But alas like much in audio the results are mixed. I have SACDs that are virtually equa...
Half-Speed Masters - are they worth double dipping?
I've added a few of these over the years; I found them in the used bin at Amoeba or the local record store. The 1/2 speed versions were a duplicate to standard pressings I already had.  After a good inspection and cleaning the results are mostly m...
Listening position/speaker position
++ for recommendations of Jim Smith's book; "Get Better Sound"  even better yet call Jim!  For a modest amount he will spend 30min with you.  You send him dimensions, pictures and a list of your equipment and he'll offer up his expertise on optimi...
Overkill for small room
Check out the room in my profile; its 13’x11’. I’m using Contour20s powered by a McIntosh 352 IA, 200 watts. Note: I was also using two subs but have since removed the subs from the set-up. They simply weren’t necessary with the deep bass range of...
Which turntable? Pro-Ject or VPI?
I'm pleased with the performance I get from an original Pro-Ject The Classic paired with a Hana SH.  I upgraded the sub-platter to the aluminum version and the platter mat to acrylic. I've considered alternatives, but I suspect I'd have to make a...
Seeking Honest Opinions: Your Experience with McIntosh Audio Gear
Equipment: MA352 Hybrid Integrated Amp,  MCD85 SACD/CD player Sound Quality:  Very subjective topic, depends on room and other equipment, but in general more natural, very detailed compared to other equipment owned.  An audible difference for the...
