LP Record Cleaning Machine - Ultrasonic or Vacuum RE: DamageI tested my home-made US machine by US cleaning the whole record, then stopping the motor and blasting the bottom third for 2 hours. I reasoned that the first cleaning should get rid of the gunk, and the 2 hour blast should eat away the ...
TELEFUNKEN E88CC-TK I have used many different iterations of Telefunken 6DJ8 variants, and older is a lot better. In order:1. 1961 Telefunken 6922 specially selected for HP2. 1964 Telefunken 6DJ8 specially selected for HP3. US Amperex wasp wasted 69224. Early Dutch A...
Koetsu step up transformer - who knows about it? Xronx is giving good advice.Oddly enough, I too compared a Rosewood cartridge through a Koetsu SUT (unknown vintage) and an Audio Note AN-8. The AN was much more revealing, and I would have to say somewhat better - but the cost! What I eventually d...
Quiet"er" record cleaner? Czar has a good idea.I built my own based on a German industrial unit from ElmaSonic. The 80KHz setting is best. But it does radiate a lot of US noise, which most people cannot hear. Nothing against my 16.5, but the US is FAR better.
Help diagnose the kind of power treatment needed Hello Lew.I would save your money for hardware. It's a pretty safe assumption that power at the wall is filthy.
Capacitance settings on Manley phonostage I hear a slight but distinct capacitance effect with my Koetsu and an SUT. I have a 250-450pF variable cap across the SUT outputs. All my records sound good somewhere within that range. As I said, the effect is slight, much less than resistive load...
Order of importance of cables Hello Rox.I suggest cleaning up your power. An industrial isolation transformer makes a difference, but it growls, and should be outside the music room. Almarg has good advice too, but I would add that capacitance and dielectric absorption are you...
transformer or sweet but low cost phono pre amp You may want to build your own box around a pair of SUT's: less money, more quality. I use Sowter 8055's with the oxygen-free copper option, Vishay VAR resistors, and Eichmann connectors. Sound is good enough for a high end Koetsu.
Spindle/bearing noise measurement Hello Graham. I use a good tonearm and disposable cartridge, with the stylus resting on the housing.
Martin Logan panel renewal Hello Ptss.I am the proud owner of 2 ML Prodigy's. They are in storage. I now use Quad 2905's, which, to my ears, are far superior. My problem is the discontinuity between the (fast) electrostatic panel, and the (slow) cone speaker. I should also m...
Need for Power Conditioning?? PTSSNo - they cost too much. I like to use 2x headroom, so use the more expensive component last.
Need for Power Conditioning?? PTSSI put the isolation transformers nearer the pole. Also, they have at least twice the capacity of the CVTs which they drive.
Need for Power Conditioning?? The power coming from most poles is anything but clean. I use industrial isolation transformers and constant voltage transformers, and they are superior to anything made for audio (anything which I have tried, that is). But, as Cox points out, the...
Ssssh, is your tube preamp really that quiet? That's why I went complementary toplogy solid state. The only tubes which were sweet and quiet in my gear were Telefunken 6922's from the early sixties, specially selected for H/P. And good luck finding those - they cost the earth fifty years ago.
Great Trumpet Players and Albums - recommendations For classical, I like Maurice Andre. Try his "Bach for Trumpet". |
