Lyra Kleos: tracking force/VTA/azimuth questions
Make a weighing step as Doug suggested. I made one similar to Wally Malewicz's with a small plastic ruler and a nylon bolt/nuts so that it can be finely adjusted. Others have used a piece of folded credit card.Wallyscale copyI'd be surprised if yo...
Help me pick a great phono cable
Currently using very inexpensive cable, and I'd like to stretch the budget to $750 (or less) and get a cable that will give me more detail, resolution, and soundstage.Goheelz Without knowing what you're currently using one can never be sure but I'...
At what vol level do you get rumble / flutter?
Actusreus,I do see your point, I probably didn't read your post above.Like you say, it is probably a combination of factors at work here. From memory the cartridges i mentioned above produced 'nervous' woofer pumping even on nominally flat records...
At what vol level do you get rumble / flutter?
07-07-12: ActusreusI understand it's marketing as well on KAB's part, but I certainly noticed differences in the degree of woofer excursions between even two perfectly flat records where everything else was constant. How else to explain it other ...
At what vol level do you get rumble / flutter?
07-07-12: Actusreus....if you have very low frequencies cut into the record itself during the cutting process, which is quite common and a fact, your speaker should flutter without a filter unless your system is incapable of reproducing these low ...
At what vol level do you get rumble / flutter?
Adding mass to the cartridge/tonearm will lower the resonant frequency. Note that warp induced signals are in the 0.5 - 7Hz region, so you don't want to drop the cartridge resonant frequency too low if your cartridge/arm/table already has a proble...
At what vol level do you get rumble / flutter?
Actusreus, I don't have any personal experience with Lyra cartridges. I did notice in looking at the specs of the Delos that the compliance is quoted as "12 x 10-6cm/dyne at 100Hz", indicating that the compliance would be considerably higher at th...
At what vol level do you get rumble / flutter?
There is a mixing of terms here.Wow actually refers to longer term speed variations in the turntable. Flutter is short term speed variations. Neither has anything to do with what you're experiencing.Rumble used to be the term used to describe nois...
Soundsmith Straingauge SG-200 cartridge system
Spirit, since you're located in the UK, retipping with ESC might be easier - no international shipping etc.I don't have any personal experience with ESC, but audio friends here in Aust have used that option and are happy. It will be interesting to ...
Soundsmith Straingauge SG-200 cartridge system
There is an interesting and recurring theme here - the question of accuracy to the recording vs verisimilitude to live music. In theory the first should get you closer to the second - but given the vagaries of the recording process that may not ne...
Soundsmith Straingauge SG-200 cartridge system
Spiritofmusic, since the standard ruby/OCL retip allows superb tracking performance in my Phantom I can't see any reason for the extra compliance mod (for my setup). I track my 103R close to standard, at around 2.3-2.4g, because I think it sounds ...
Soundsmith Straingauge SG-200 cartridge system
Spiritofmusic, my success rate is 100% - I've sent two 103R cartridges to Soundsmith for the ruby/OCL retip - the second is on its way back to me at the moment (so I have a spare).I think Peter would have the 103 rebuild down to a fine art, since ...
Soundsmith Straingauge SG-200 cartridge system
Spiritofmusic, to be honest I haven't played the Garrott for some time because the results I'm getting with the SS/103R have been so impressive. If fact I haven't even heard the Garrott with the Cary phono - which is something I really should do.I ...
Soundsmith Straingauge SG-200 cartridge system
If you like your Zu 103, why not go the next step and get a Soundsmith OCL retip.I've been using an SS retipped 103R in a Midas aluminium body for some time now and the jump in realism and transparency over the stock conical tip is amazing. The ca...
Stand out phono stages
Is there any phono stage produced anywhere that hasn't been named in this thread?Good luck to the poor sod who reads this with the idea of creating a shortlist.
