Has this been settled? compression driver/horn vs cone speaker?

have the best compression driver/horn combinations met or exceeded the best cone speakers?

Horns get a bad rap....  I love the dynamics and sense of scale that you get with only 40 watts of tubey goodness.
Yes compression systems have better specs lower distortion less thermal compresion ability to control radation patern greatly reduced bass distortions over convential dynamic designs. Convential dynamic designs can have a bit less coloration but mostly there benifits lie in ease to ship design house and sell not in any performance aspect they are inferoir to full horn system in any measurable way and it also seems subjectivily so for those who end up with horns mostly have experanced the rest. I know most have standard dynamic designs and they do not want to hear this but its true.
Really depends so much on implementation and application.

If you want to listen to a 5W SET amp for instance, only one of those will work at all. :)

Best,

There is no superior tech, only implementation. The JBL M2’s use compression driver for the tweeter and it’s a great speaker, whereas Revel uses a regular tweeter for their Salon2.
