I have a VPI classic that hisses (or buzz) when I play it. I am using a McIntosh 7200; the ground is properly connected both to the turntable and amp, and not sure what else to do. Any thoughts or experience remedying this issue?
Hiss is likely RFI, not a grouding problem per se. Viridian's idea to short the unused inputs is worth a try. But what the OP described as a hiss is later referred to by others as a buzz.
Is the problem in the phono stage or the turntable? If you disconnect the phonograph from the phono stage do you still have the hiss? If you have shorting plugs handy, short the inputs to the phono stage when you do this test. If not just disconnect the RCAs from the phono stage.
