DAC Upgrade

Thinking it's time to upgrade my DAC. Here's the system:

Cyrus CD/t

Belles Aria integrated amp

Fritz Carbon 7 speakers

Schiit Gungnir dac

The Schiit can be upgraded to "multibit" for $500, thus making it an "Yggdrasil Junior."

Is the additional $500 (on top of the original $899) worth it, or am I better off selling the Schiit and taking that plus $500 and going with something else?

FWIW, I like Schiit's business model and that they're a (mostly) California-based company. Also, I'd prefer to buy American wherever possible.

I'll be the first to admit that I find the technical (and marketing) jargon elusive, particularly where DACs are concerned. I listen primarily to CD's.

Appreciate the input!

Neither is American made as is your preference but are highly regarded for true exceptional quality sound.

1 Musician Audio Pegasus DAC.

2 Merason Frerot DAC.

i have not heard the basic gungnir but i felt the multibit version is very good

dena pontus is perhaps a touch more open and spacious, but very very close

the mhdt tube dacs have a somewhat different sound, more laid back, warmer overall

I have a Gungnir multibit which was a experiment for a friend who we decided on a Yggdrasil. I think it depends on your long termed intent. If it is to build a much better system over time then I would wait until you can afford to buy a Yggdrasil. If you are thinking this is your final destination, I would do the upgrade. I was a long time skeptic of Schiit… but their performance makes up for their ineptitude in marketing.

When it comes to buying american, Schiit offers the best value for money. BTW,  @ericsch Denafriprs is Singaporean, not american 🙂
