Does carpet deaden the sound too much?

I’ve always had my speakers on carpet, but alway feel my system could be a little more livelier. Is it the carpet that absorbs life out of the sound?

I thought my carpeted (Living) Room sounded pretty good. Then I removed it and installed hardwood and an area rug, Wow! Much better.I don't know that that is a rule. But I prefer the sound more now than with the w2w carpet

I now have my best listening room ever -- Bare wood floor. Plaster ceiling. A gently rectangular shape. Solid wood door. No acoustic treatments.

In my fifty years of pursuing the high end, no. In general, you want the two speakers to integrate the sound. Reflections from the wall and floor create slightly different arrival times confusing the sound. Anything that causes multiple arrival times of the same sound can be really detrimental.

I have never experienced good sound in rooms with uncovered floors or glass behind them. Planar speakers can be helped with some reflectivity behind, but not glass, maybe painted walls… not sure of why.

Use spikes for the speakers.  Make sure they rest on a hard surface.

No, carpets are fine, the total room balance matters.

@holmz - he's asking if too much absorption is a possible reason for the system not sounding lively.

I say, very unlikely that this singularly would be the culprit

^Agree.^

We have no info the speakers, and we have no info on the rest of the room.

However if the speakers are spraying a lot of sound towards the floor, then it is possible.

I am sure a measurement would help.
