Sony SCD-777es as transport?

Would I be better off getting a new CD player or getting an outboard DAC and using the Sony as a transport. Has anyone used it this way?

The last company that makes a transport is Phillips, excepting those firms that claim they make it themselves such as Esoteric.

The transport section obtained major gains in performance, but you're looking at around $1K in parts & labor to get up there.
