Tom Evans Phono Preamp Repair

The build "quality" is something to see. Particularly if you compare it to anything built in Shenzen in the last five years.

At a wild guess, this is a hobby project that sells for silly prices. Gotta give them credit for the creative writing in the brochure ... not every audio product claims "alien technology" as part of the design brief.

I watched the video prior to all the hubbub. I've done a lot of modding over 30 years, those internals are ridiculously poor, guy got exposed.  I wouldn't even care about sound quality with these units, lack of reliability inevitable here.

The original video has now been posted back up after the takedown by several YT channels. A perfect example of the Streisand effect.

One can hope this will remind manufacturers to take care of their customers, especially when they’re spending well over $20k on their product. Fix the thing for a reasonable fee, and throw in a few dozen plastic standoffs for the customer’s trouble.

If Tom is only building 10 a year, it’ll probably be even less now.  Rare doesn’t necessarily equal good.

Tom will continue selling mainly to Brits and Europeans, who know him better than American audiophiles, especially those "audiophiles" who’ve only been into audio since 2001. Tom’s been around twice that. So, that side of the pond, from the feedback I’ve gotten, aren’t placing much stock in the video. One response was "Americans! Can’t live without tearing someone down online these days."

Tom will continue to sell on that side of the pond for another 20 years, and I doubt he’ll lose business, for the same reason as always: Loyalty. Europeans’ loyalties don’t fade, even after decades, as my British boyfriend reminded me once. Here? People here watch one video and suddenly they resemble the mob chasing Frankenstein (in his eponymous debut movie), even though they’ve never heard one of his units, or know one single thing bout the man, his ethics or his morality. Doesn't stop them from offering an opinion on something they know absolutely nothing about.

As an owner of a Groove and a MicroGroove, I’m wildly enthusiastic about my units, which I’ve owned for 25 years. The sonics matter to me. And his units’ sonic capabilities are fantastic.
