Good advice.
What preamp with both line stage and phono?
I’m contemplating upgrading my preamp, it’s the earlier Shindo Monbrison version, with both a line stage and MC/MM phono for under 8-10k$ new or used. Either in one unit or separates. I personally love the Shindo sound, it has the body, texture, sense of space to instruments that sound right to my ears vs an overly articulate presentation. the next up Shindo preamp Masseto with a lower output impedance is no longer available . The earlier Monbrison has a higher output impedance 5k unbalanced. It actually works quite well with my Pass Labs x350.8 that has the newer input impedance of 50k and Maggies 20.7. Reason for upgrading is really curiosity, since I recently demoed the CJ 350se amp highly regarded that has a 100k input impedance. The sound was detailed, transparent, could be aggressive depending on what was played, definitely thrilling, with more extension in the upper registers. What was missing with the CJ in my system was the mid range magic and weight of the Pass Labs that I would hate to give up. Always looking for both. A friend has offered to let me demo his JC1+ mono that has an input impedance less than 50k. So not sure how that will work. I’m open to suggestions on amps but I’ve found it hard to find a power amp w/100k input impedance that’s in a similar power and price range that can bring the Maggies to life. So the reason for exploring preamp options with a low output impedance and a bit more transparency, extension but still has the richer overtones of tubes. some that may come to mind by VTL, CJ but I don't have any experience with either. Thank you in advance for your thoughts and experience.

If I were looking to upgrade, I'd strongly consider a preowned Conrad-Johnson ACT2. In my opinion, and just my opinion, one of the finest preamps available at any price. https://www.stereophile.com/tubepreamps/305cj/index.html |
I went to my Monbrisson from a Jadis JP200. I would not consider any other preamp to be, overall, an upgrade over the Shindo, but my suggestions if you want to try something different but keep something like the Shindo sound would be a used VAC or a Jadis JP80, my experience with them has been that they have that midrange that you like. Don't know anything about their output impedances, though. |
I read your post several times, I am confused if you are actually looking to upgrade the pre-amp, or if you should be trying to upgrade your amplifier? you love the Shindo, so try a different amp. Try a Coda 16- my 15.5+ sounds exceptional with my 3.6r’s. 100 watts per channel of class A, then it transitions into class AB 150 wpc, 100 amps of current your maggies will appreciate, and it doesn’t get hot. Have not heard their 07x preamp, but have read that it is warm as tubes, and obviously matches well with their amplifiers. The coda 16 has 50k unbalanced input impedance, but as suggested above maybe you are in the market for a dedicated phone stage? that may satisfy your "curiousity". |
