Quboz cuts off beginning of songs

Here's my current setup:

Fiber Ethernet 300m>Innuos Pulse>Bryston BDA3>Preamp

and my previous setup:

Fiber Ethernet>Bluesound Node 2i w LPS>Schiit Bifrost 2/64>preamp

In both configurations, when the resolution changes, the beginning half second or so is either cut off, or there's    a  brief stutter. If I hit "Back" it plays normally. If I go back to the previous song and make it change the resolution, the same happens. It appears to me that Quboz starts the song before the DAC has changed resolution. So, new streamer, new DAC, same issue.

I've been working with Innuos support to determine if there's a solution using their logs as a view into what's happening. That's still ongoing. But I don't see anyone else with this issue posting about it so I thought I would see if anyone else is experiencing this, or whether anyone has thoughts about what I'm experiencing.

Is it possible that both DACs have an issue with not switching quickly enough? But I've also experienced this using a Chromecast to stream Quboz, so that points to Quboz as the issue. But again, nobody has posted about this.

Any ideas?

I don’t have InnuOS but here’s what I was able to google

  1. Access the Sense app: Open the Innuos Sense app on your device.
  2. Navigate to settings: Go to System > Settings > Audio.
  3. Locate USB Latency Mode: Find the setting labeled "USB Latency Mode".
  4. Choose your setting: You can choose between "Normal" or "Low".
  5. Experiment: Try both settings to see which one you prefer for your setup and listening preferences.

Considerations:

  • "Normal" mode: is generally recommended as it is a safer buffer for DACs.
  • "Low" mode: can potentially offer audible improvements in sound quality but may not be compatible with all DACs, according to Innuos Community
  • If you encounter issues with your DAC after switching to "Low" mode, revert to "Normal".

To add to the confusion, today I received a reply from Bryston explaining that the delay is by design to prevent "pops" during a resolution change. This was true of my Schiit Bifrost as well.

Are there DACs that have another way to deal with this issue. I find it disconcerting that Bryston considers normal.

Try the buffer settings in innuos and see if it resolves it

I used to own BDA-3 and used it with Lumin U1 Mini. Don’t recall it swallowing the first few seconds of a song. But do recall a static like pop

OP  …“Are there DACs that have another way to deal with this issue.”

Yes, practically all. Berkeley, Linn, Audio Research, dCS…etc.

DACs I had that didn’t have these issues -

Bricasti M3

Chord Qutest and Hugo TT2

Benchmark DAC3

PS Audio DSD Mark 1

Meitner MA3i

It could be a combination of Innuos and your dac. If the buffer settings make no difference you either need another streamer or another dac to remedy this hiccup.
