The idea may have come from a product introduced back in the 70's that was similar to clear silicon caulking. You would smear the substance onto the entire grooved portion of an LP. After it set up you would simply peal it off, hopefully in one piece, and with it all the dirt and dust from the groves. Unfortunately it never all came up with the peal.
