Assuming you care most about CD performance; from my experience the best way to get good CD performance along with DVD, without spending a lot of money, is to use a separate audio DAC (digital to analog converter) for CD playback and use the DVD player to spin the CD's.
Now if money is no object then there are many good DVD players with good CD playback as well.
For as little as $100 to $150 used you could find an original MSB Link DAC, or a Cambridge Audio DACmagic.
For around +/-$500 a Bel Canto DAC-1 is nice.
Look through the Audiogon classified listings for many many more good choices. Look for Muse, Audio Alchemy, Theta, ART DIO, CI Audio
