Optical digital cables?
No, there isn't any real difference between 2 feet and 3 feet for optical cable.  The disadvantages for short cable length come into play when we are dealing with digital COAX or USB/HDMI type cables, where the minimum length should always be 5-6 ...
Serious Passive Preamp question
As I have said before, a passive preamp can be a tool, but it really depends on your source/DAC and your amplifier.  If you have a DAC that is very fast and solid-state sounding, I think a passive is not really the right tool as you need an active...
Parasound Halo P
Agreed.  The DAC in the Oppo 105 is actually quite good, although it may sound just a tiny bit dry.  I don't know much about the PT-7030, but I have heard that it's pretty darn good for what it is.  The Parasound preamp (even the P7) is likely not...
Krell krs 2 preamp
Krell usually does not answer a lot of inquiries like this from email.  If you are serious about getting this fixed, the best way to do it is submit a request for Krell Repair RMA.  Be aware that Krell has been extremely overloaded in their repair...
Greenhorn question: Beware!
Al brings up an excellent point - one I hadn't thought about.  However, he's totally correct.  Another thing -- the crossovers inside the speakers are engineered based on the expected impedance of the following driver (i.e. low-pass coil circuit f...

The Blue Jeans toslink, which is Mitsubishi ESKA, is just like all the other low cost mono-filament toslink cables.  It's basically a single plastic element that transfers the light.  These plastic mono-filament will sound dull and low-resolution ...
ATI AT4003 / ATI AT543NC for ATC SCM / Dyndaudio
Nope, I have not heard them directly.  I'm a Class AB guy, running fuse-upgraded Parasound JC1s, so I have no reason to hunt out ATI type equipment.  I have looked at the ATI pictures, that show a good power supply architecture in the AT543NC and ...
Home theater bypass
A couple of ideas here.  If you are using a separate amp for center/surrounds, then you could use the 12V trigger output from that amp to trigger the C48 into bypass mode.  ---Another idea would be to get one of those 12V wall wart DC power adapte...

The Vandersteen have a very unique warm/dry type of sound, mostly due to the combination of a poly mid (warm sounding) and the coated metal tweeter (contributing to the dry sound). If you love that sound, that’s great! The Vandersteen 2c looks to ...

Hey guys, before we get too deep in sound bar options and single TV options, shadowcat specifically said he wanted to build a good sounding "low end audiphile" HT system.  As good a sound bars are, I don't think that's the direction he really want...

david_ten has a suggestion, but I would like to point out that a soundbar is somewhat of a "final solution". You really can’t upgrade or expand that solution. It is designed for people who want a easy solution to just putting sound out for their t...
ATI AT4003 / ATI AT543NC for ATC SCM / Dyndaudio
The AT543NC uses the latest N-Core Class D amplifier circuit.  If you have not heard Class D amps before, I would suggest seeing if you can listen to one if you are serious about it.  I have heard Class D amps and they can be so extremely clean so...

Okay, so an AV Receiver is going to be your target. One thing to know with these is that it is best if you buy the biggest and most powerful one you can. Ignore the fact that it’s a “11 channel receiver”. I recommend buying the biggest because ...

Yeah, I think before all of us start answering questions (which happened fast here), we need to know how much money you are looking at investing.  Is it $1,000?  $2,000?  $5,000?   You can probably get a decent setup for any of these amounts, but ...
