Parasound P7 or Cary Cinema 11 ?
If you want to look for options on upgrading the Cary:- Bryston SP3- Classe SSP-800- Krell Foundation (although it doesn't have 7.1 analog inputs, but since it's a digital processor, you don't really need it).

I had the Marantz AV8804 in my system for an afternoon.  A friend brought it over to demo/test.  I was actually very impressed with it for audio.  It does have good impact.  However, when I switched back to my Krell S1200U-3D, it was apparent that...

Crimping Furutech FP203R spades
I haven't done the hydraulic press thing (I didn't look for a tool).  I do know these FP-203 spades are impossible to crimp with normal tools.  I have always used the FP-201 spades instead.  They have screw-down clamps to hold the speaker wire, an...
Parasound P7 or Cary Cinema 11 ?
the Parasound P7 is strictly a 7 channel analog preamp only with some bass management options. The Cary Cinema 11 is a full blown HT processor with HDMI inputs and full audio decoding for everything up to bluray Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA.  It also...
Amplifier for B&W 705 S2
I generally shy away from silver plated wire because I have found it is artificial sounding.  Many people like silver.  I was just recommending against it for chinook9 because he didn't like the brightness from his B&W speakers.

The Anthem AVM 50 does not support Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, but you can still play those discs through systems for backwards compatibility.  The newer AVM-60 supports them, but the 60 typically goes for $2k used.Marantz AV770x are very nice processor...
A/V Receiver Recommendation for a newby.
For your information, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are not hard requirements.  You can play a Dolby Atmos movie through a normal non-Atmos processor and it will work just fine.  Both formats are fully backward compatable.  I would say that you really onl...
A/V Receiver Recommendation for a newby.
Buying a used Anthem MRX 520 (or similar) is likely your best bet.  Then look for a good 3 channel amp in the future to use for your front speakers.  The Anthem AVR receivers have analog pre-outs so that you can add an external amp anytime.
Best Quality AVR (DAC/AMPS) for 7.1 (or 7.2) from the past 6 years?
If you want a very high resolution and ultra revealing AVR, the Anthem MRX 1120 is likely the best.  It is an 11 channel receiver, but you are also paying for the larger power supply.  That will significantly improve your 7.1 speaker setup.Otherwi...
A/V Receiver Recommendation for a newby.
The Onkyo 797 may be a small bit better, but it's still not going to be as powerful as other's recommend.  The obvious recommendation would be to add an external amp, but these Onkyo receivers do not have analog pre-outs.  It's unfortunate.A $1,00...
Aes-ebu vs. balanced cable
Most XLR analog interconnects are built differently than digital AES/EBU cables.  You can use an analog interconnect just fine for AES/EBU, but it is not going to give you as good as performance as a true digital AES/EBU cable.  Analog cables have...
How important is a Linear Power Supply Versus a Switcyed one?
I have always found a linear power to be an improvement over a switching power supply.  This is both in analog sources/preamp as well as digital transport sources.  If your system is very warm and laid back, you may not notice any difference.  I t...
Best fan for cooling your music room
Is your listening room sealed?  Like others have said, a fan will just move hot air around in the same room.  Your audio equipment will definitely heat up the room.  The goal is to move hot air out of the room and cycle new air in.  If you have a ...
Using a Rel Sub with a dedicated center channel
The Marantz should be plenty powerful.  The Yamaha receiver could be setting a high 120hz crossover point because the center may not be producing as much bass because of room nodes and bass node cancellation.  It's not because the center won't do ...
