Bose buys McIntosh Better to read a story about a buyout vs. another legacy company going defunct.
Friends hi-fi system not very good, what do you do or say? Bring your friend to an audio show or maybe a tour of other peoples systems in your area. Compare from there and discuss what you hear and think about each system. Then go back home and listen to each of your own systems to figure out how they su...
Solid State Preamp to replace tube unit @jimbones does your Nad M23 amplifier mentioned in your original post hold up to that classical music challenge for you?
Solid State Preamp to replace tube unit @jimbones wow, sounds like you have all the bases covered and then some, and access to capable people around you to test things out. Very nice. The only reason I commented was the original post was the possibility of a solid state preamp instead...
Nakamichi CA-7A Preamp @uncleang yeah I never said that, but do test other units he did design. My local tech did work at Threshold, lives down the road, and cautioned about the boards in those older units, so I don't run an of that in my primary system for that reason...
Solid State Preamp to replace tube unit Heillo @jimbones after reading back through this thread and some of the steps you’ve taken so far, and about to take next, there are helpful suggestions by several members here. One is to ensure you have clean power at the outlet -or- your P...
Nakamichi CA-7A Preamp As a Nakamichi fan - when I was specifically looking for the right CA-5 preamp instead for other reasons, simplicity, sonically - I had scoured CA-7s out there and spoke with many owner-sellers who enjoyed them a lot. For a secondary SS system, I...
Seeking a Warm 12AX7 Tube for Preamp Dropping from the higher gain 12ax7/100 down to a 5751/70 or a 12aT7/60, just having the lower gain should make a difference to help calm things down some. While I currently use mid 1960s Mullard Blackburn 12Au7 and 12At7s myself in my amps, the ...
Single ended = large images? @montaldo to help you save time, grief, and wonder just give Brent Jesse a call, and ask for the best measuring tubes he can offer for your QS V4s. I looked up yours there and they are not too costly. He uses a real curve tracer for testing for m...
Single ended = large images? @montaldo along with QS V4 power tubes, upgraded coupling capacitors, those little front end input/driver tubes matter as well. What are you using now - brand, model, year: 1 - 12FQ7 input? 1 - 12BH7 or 12FQ7 driver?
Single ended = large images? @montaldo its worth checking what you have inside first. There was a batch of guys who saw my first post about 4-5 years ago and tried them in the M120s and the V4 amps. Cannot say I recommend it unless you have a lot of patience getting through t...
Single ended = large images? @montaldo sure, I started with KT150s in my QS M120s. They have a little more top end and a little more bottom end compared to the KT120s. I came from Cary, EL34s and Triode amps too. For me, I will always favor that EL34 midrange type of bloomy s...
Single ended = large images? @montaldo fwiw, I came from four different Cary amps [triode/ultralinear) and did the whole DH Inspire Hot Rod Triode thing for a while too. I mention this because I see you run QS V4s with KT150s. My current amps [now upgraded] are the QS M120s o...
Schiit Yggdrasil DAC, why did they change it ? @moonwatcher not dark, that's for sure. I had come from some warmer dacs prior, and including an upgraded tube dac [different cap and tube options] too which was open but warmer too if that makes any sense. I needed a fill-in dac to use while I wa...
Schiit Yggdrasil DAC, why did they change it ? @moonwatcher while I had the new BF 2/64 for less than a year, I did not own the Yggy prior. Liked Yggy, just wanted a smaller footprint dac to try that was close enough to try, maybe. I still gather Yggy in some versions is its own gem of course.... |
