Is tonearm bias a compromise, maybe a myth?
All skin and bones and no meat, which is pretty much what you get when the antiskate is out. I use female opera singers for checking anti skate, I have a couple of records that wont track if its out.
Beware MSS Hifi, avoid Fraud
Isn't it funny how you have to pay to fix a known fault in a product.Of course if it was a car you would just paint a big lemon on the doors and bonnet, drive around in a gorilla suit and get the local TV company to feature it on the news - hey pr...
Help me pick a great phono cable
One of the best ways to improve your phono cable is to keep it as short as possible. Given that your TT phono sockets and phono inputs on the MacIntosh are right next to each other check if a 1/2 metre interconnect or less will be enough. It appear...
The finest Cable Elevators you ever auditioned?
Agree with the toilet roll solution, the natural unbleached sounding very open in the midrange, with a natural bottom end.Seriously though lifting speaker cables off the floor does give a subtle benefit, you can try anything - toilet rolls, kids w...
Don't use this to lube your VPI Classic bearing
Please beware Teflon based oils and greases - the Teflon particles can embed themselves into the surface of the metal bearings, then metal particles embed themselves into the Teflon, resulting in INCREASED bearing wear.Personally I never use teflo...
SME V : what to expect ?
Agree with Peterayer. I've had SME V on Sota Star ( vacuum ) and sounded great.Cartridges used were Koetsu Rosewood, Black, Madrigal Carnegie and van den hul grasshopper. Other arms compared with at the time were ET2, Syrinx PU3, Alphason, Sumiko ...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Lewm/Almarg, on the Marantz 7 circuit, it has a 1meg resistor/100pf cap ON the tube across grid/cathode and a 47k resistor/150pf cap paralelled at the input. I have read that the loading resistor should be on the tube to minimise parasitic issues ...
Which cartridge do you use with the vpi classic?
Amyone that sticks a $5k cartridge on a $2k deck with an average arm needs their head read or their ears cleaned out..
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
If you go back to Japanese vintage gear from the 60's-70's from whence many of these MM's came, you will find that 33k,47k & 100k are common front panel loading options, and I have also seen 80k. Interestingly there are benefits here for some ...
SME V : what to expect ?
Having owned both the SME V and ET2, as well as the Gyrodec and Oracle, I can concur with Frogman 100%.The SME V is a great arm on a deck that suits it, eg Sota/SME V. It was a complete disaster for example on the Linn Sondek when it was 1st relea...
Is a vinyl rig only worth it for oldies?
Although I prefer analogue by a long way, I agree with Mapman, it is going to come down to the quality of the implementation. To me the biggest issue for analogue is the inability for most people to set a turntable up correctly. I can listen to si...
Is a vinyl rig only worth it for oldies?
Raul, I am absolutely astonished by your post on bass above and its importance to reproduction. Do you only listen to bass ?Given that your room is not large, the analogue gear sits between your speakers, the miss-match of multiple drivers and amp...
Best Cart for Delphi VI with SME V tonearm
Marakanetz, it is all about synergy. You may well be right in another system, but I know from experience the Koetsu is a very good match for the Oracle. The cartridges above are all excellent but I wouldn't call any of them full bodied. Of the car...
Best Cart for Delphi VI with SME V tonearm
What I meant was the Oracle/SME is going to sound significantly different to the Orbe/SME, so get a view on that first. I found the Koetsu Black very complementary to the Oracle in producing a tight punchy full bodied sound without bloat. It was v...
TriPlanar Tips
Atmasphere, you are in the minority, you are looking for high fidelity. I think most audiophiles, 80-90%, are trying to create a sound that fits their notion of what a system should sound like, which has little or nothing to do with fidelity. As a ...
