Publication bias and confounders in product reviews - TAS, Stereophile, Audiogon, etcetera It is often difficult to decipher a Stereophile review. As someone above noted, theymay damn a product with faint praise. Many of their reviews seem inconclusive or unenthusiastic - which usually means "there are better products out there". Wh...
EL34 tubes- alternates to matched octet for Primaluna HP dialogue premium Blues41, Small signal tubes are plentiful and to some degree afordable. I was referring to power tubes. 8 old matched Mullard el34’s? You can’t be serious.
EL34 tubes- alternates to matched octet for Primaluna HP dialogue premium Matched modern power tubes are fine. 8 matched NOS power tubes would cost way too much, and besides, you won’t really find 8 matched tubes- there aren’t enough of them to sort and match them like they can new production. The recommendation for 8...
For tube sound, which is more important: preamp or power amp? I went all tube- pre, amp, phono - more than 30 years ago, when SS amps were harsh and consequently, I had lost interest in recorded music. Solved that problem! Amps and preamps are equally important. As many above have noted, there are many ways...
why do people feel the need to buy expensive cable Science is not a religion. That's ridiculous.
Modwright Preamp Owners. Thanks for the insight on the LS 100. I went from an Audio Research Ls-15 to MW 36.5 years ago. Huge improvement. No doubt the separate MW power supply would improve things, and I guess one might find a preamp which suits his taste slightly mor...
Does anyone use hearing aids when listening to your hi-fi audio system? psag, I have Oticon Intiga 10 hearing aids. The newer aids have faster processors and software.
Triode or Ultra-linear? Why? Wolf, one rumor I heard was that Mesa got tired of dealing with the demands of audio dealers, who wanted frequent "upgrades" to be made available.
Triode or Ultra-linear? Why? Tablejockey, Yes, the Baron can be run in all-pentode mode, but the sound it a bit harsh. Don't know why. I don't think anyone used them in all-pentode mode for long.
Are future improvements in Amp/PreAmps slowing to a crawl? How about a rule that after x posts by a 'Goner on a single question, no more? How do these people find the time to engage in such pointlessness?
How does the sound of a power tube change, over time? For the reason Wolf gave, you tend to accumulate backup tubes. You can't tell you needed to, until you replace them, and then things sound a little better. I have at least 5 sets of 12 power tubes, and many preamp tubes, in reserve...not worth t...
Triode or Ultra-linear? Why? +1 @tablejockey , Who describes the trade-off precisely. I prefer the lower distortion of triode, even with the slight reductions at frequency extremes, with my Mesa Baron, for virtually all music except loud rock.
Does anyone use hearing aids when listening to your hi-fi audio system? I sometimes do. Cymbals otherwise have no shimmer, and so forth. A hearing aid is an equalizer matched to the curve of your hearing loss, for each ear, with some extra processing (admittedly, some compression.) Inexpensive aids won't do. Mine a...
How to add center channel to stereo thanks. I guess I'll be proceeding along those lines.
Amps from the 1980's -- What gear holds up sonically? Reliably? Hi Eric, I can't say I know 80's tube amps well. Currently using a Mesa Baron from 1995, still happy with it.It was a "light bulb" moment when I realized the reason I was disinterested with recorded music was due to cd's and solid state. Fixed that! |
