'In Home Dealers' are the future?
Sns - Good point about sales tax. Shipping on a $3000 phono cartridge is maybe $200. Shipping from out of state is probably more like $10.The above is an extreme example but one that applies to a lesser degree with most other purchases.

Everybody has some affiliation or affinity. We all have preferences and opinions. Most of us don't know what we're talking about. Only a fool would buy expensive equipment on the basis of recommendations from total strangers on a chatroom forum. F...
'In Home Dealers' are the future?
Our economy has been in trouble for a long time but we chose to ignore the fact until it was inescapable. The same goes for the entire high end audio farce. We have been paying the price and believing the reviewers while blissfully overlooking the...
DVD movies must have
Just in case somebody here prefers music to sound effects I'll suggest ......... "Across the Universe".
Headphone Amps and Portable/Personal Stereo???
Eastern electric CD player can be had for about $650 used. That's all you will need. It has headphone jack and volume control. Something else to consider for the future is an inexpensive vintage direct drive table and a Bellari VP-129 - same story...
The Economy.. will hi end audio mfgs lower prices?
If you think anything that has happened to our economy was due to incompetence, then you have taken the bait and swallowed the Kool-Aid. As Sns pointed out above, an effort was made to include Social Security in this plunder. Back in 1998 the grou...
quiet hiss in backround?
Sure Mike,Not much to tell. I have a pair of Audio Mirror 20 watt mono tube amps. They are self-biasing, SET amps and use a quad of output tubes every 2000 hours. I'm using one of the better horn speakers on the market so my choice of amplifier is...
quiet hiss in backround?
Every once in a while a tube will go out so you might want a good tube tester and a few extras around. I would guess every other year you'll need to change them all out which is nothing more than screwing out the old ones and screwing in the new o...
What components are manufactured in the U.S.A.?
Your chances of buying American rise exponentially if you stick to vintage gear. At least the lines were more clearly drawn 30 years ago. I have vintage JBL speakers topped with modern Canadian horns with Italian compression drivers, and a pair of...
xlr to rca cables
I agree with Tvad. There is no audible advantage to be had because you will still be sending your signal through single ended cables. There is a small practical advantage in the locking connection you get with an XLR but that's only on one end.
You're probably listening too loud
I agree with Chayro. Better to start low and bring it up as needed. Part of the problem many of us face is little toy speakers and make believe woofers. Get some sizable horns and the dynamic capability of compression drivers. This enables one to ...
Rowland Continuum 500, RCA vs. XLR
Balanced cables provide three benefits. You get locking connections in every case, and if you are running a significant distance you will have less signal loss than single ended, and better quieting capability as both poles are within each run. Th...
Do amps sound better when left on for 30 minutes ?
How would anyone know the answer to this critical question? I guess they would have to listen and decide. I'll do that for you for $100 or you could just do it yourself for free. Let me know what you decide is the best course.
New Rowland Criterion 2-chassis battery pre
I use a Capri preamp which I consider to be a very high performance bargain. No matter how good the Criterion turns out to be, the existence of the Capri for a small fraction of the money forces the Criretion and most other statement products deep...
