Mobile Fidelity is back in business
Kelly, the Music Direct form to get our opinions that I got in the mail today asks us to rate from 1-4 the formats we'd like, among gold CDs, SACD, DVD-A and vinyl. So they're not ruling out vinyl yet. Hopefully that question is asked on-line as w...
High Quality FM Tuner - Advice
The Day Sequerra remains my favorite, but I'm not sure if it's still made. It was so good that it forced me to get a top-quality roof antenna to take advantage of its capabilities. A work of art. All of the ones mentioned above are excellent, alth...
Graham 2.2 Upgrade-Worth It?
Just to let you know that almost 3 months after I ordered it I finally got my upgrade last night. Mikelavigne is correct on all counts, two additional thoughts: 1. The bass is not only deeper and tighter, it still is very rich and full, something ...
DAC or Upgraded Analogue in SACD units?
Kenl, I was only referring to the CD playback, not SACD, which is a different ballgame. Sorry for the confusion. You should listen to both the Wadia and Sony units if you can, they each have their own strengths and weaknesses, but on the whole I f...
DAC or Upgraded Analogue in SACD units?
Bill: There is no truth, just what your ears tell you. Well, so much for philosophy. My recollection is that you are considering the SCD-1, which from my auditioning along with the sonically very similar 777ES I own I would consider as sonically i...
Reasonably priced 2K Phono Preamp?
If you can find one (never easy), a used Vendetta Research 2B or C would be as good as any units out there. I saw one a few weeks ago on A-gon, but it seems to have been snapped up. I had one a number of years ago, sold it when I got my JP80MC, it...
Music trivia anyone?
Undertaker, in answer to a question of yours from way back, as I listened to it the other night, I don't think the Beatles played any instruments on "Eleanor Rigby".
Opinions on Miller Sound cables
I agree with Vtvu, having auditioned them in my system for a week, I found them to be quite neutral, with excellent transient response and tight, extended bass. Liked them better than the Kimber Silver Streak I was using for my bass amplifiers, a ...
Music to make you laugh by
Anything by PDQ Bach, for classical, and the Roches' rendition of Winter Wonderland (sung with terrific Brooklyn accents) from their Christmas CD.
Is there an SACD that can play cds well?
Albert, since you expressed an interest, there are some additional upgrades around to improve the analog stages of these players which have been discussed in various threads-- Stan Warren does some for the 9000ES which Simontju had done (not sure ...
Opinions on Sonoran cables
Doug, you're right, it was a long time back, but he thought they were among the best available at the time. Quite frankly, I don't think there have been that many quantum leaps in cable technology since then either, despite what the manufacturers ...
What s Your Frame of Reference?
An interesting question. Gregm's suggestion of the Chesky disc is a good one. The Stereophile recordings have detailed notes as to what they think the recording sounds like, those are also helpful. Otherwise, I try to play well-recorded recordings...
Absolute Best power amp, tube ss
For solid state, the best I've heard are the Levinson 33s; for tubes, a few--Jadis JA80s and JA200s (using Gold Lion KT88s); Lamm ML-1s and 2s; and the Audio Matiere Ultimas.
Opinions on Sonoran cables
I had their original interconnects and speaker cables (Cactus and Desert, I believe), and still use their interconnect for my tuner. I like it, it's quite neutral, maybe leaning a little to the rich and sweet rather than bright and ruthlessly reve...
Most achingly-beautiful music
Detlof, thank you for the recommendation on the Kindertotenlieder. I only recently heard this piece on the radio and found it deeply moving. And Tejo for your thoughts on Pires. I always learn something from this thread, glad it's still going strong.
