patricia barber - diana krall - holly cole
Patricia Barber forced me to remove the lid from a large Steinway and I had to put it back on after the show. I'm clearly not over that, but hey...she sounded brilliant.
Who says studio monitors are "cold and analytical"?
Kenjit clearly has never actually been in a studio, but I have. As far back as the late 60s and as recently as this year, and I can say without hesitation that studio monitors have never been "flat." Large horns, the JBL stuff in the 70s, those te...
Four Hour Tube Amp Warm-Up
My tube amps seem to warm up pretty quickly...10 to 20 minutes maybe? My Pass XA-25 takes about 45 minutes although it sounds damn good immediately upon start-up.
Why is everyone so down on MQA?
Tidal MQA sounds fine and I'm not sure how much unfolding is happening (Schiit Bifrost 2/64 multibit upgrade), but then my system sort of makes everything sound from fine to outstanding...and that's how it should be.
Convincing your local dealer to let you try speakers at home
With demo speakers it makes sense to allow you to take 'em home...a place in NH does that if you put a card on them to insure you don't run off. I'll never buy speakers again without a serious audition as I've had to return a pair of ZUs, sell a p...
Pass Labs Speaker Choices
XA-25 with Heresy IIIs sounds sweet and can make you happier and restore hair loss.
Klipsch La Scala replacement?
Heresy IIIs sound better to me having compared them to IVs in my system...the mid horn is far simpler (a complete re-design without the interesting horn throat design the IIIs have) in the IVs and has a plastic diaphragm instead of titanium. They'...
Tube-Curious/Pre-amp
I've owned lots of preamps over many years, but my original version Freya (early adopter) with NOS GEs is a superb sounding preamp with features nothing else even comes close to. Runs quieter in its tube mode than most SS or passive preamps do wit...
I'm looking to add sub-woofers to my system...
I bought my first used REL, a Q150e, for just over 200 bucks some years ago (8 or 10?), and later a Q108MK2 also for around 200 bucks...they're still in my main system and sound perfect. I bought another Q150e (maybe $300) a couple of years ago an...
The difference between an Audiophile and a Stereophile?
Currently my entire neighborhood is being cryo treated by nature and it does kind of sound better, so I suggest covering cables with snow. A "stereophile" is committed to 2 channel listening, while the opposite is actually a "monophile." An audiop...
Please share pics of what inside YOUR power conditioners
A Bryston Bit 15 is basically a giant toroidal transformer and some small bits and weighs a lot, which is really a gravity thing.
Mid-fi tube vs high-end SS
Tubes aren't getting harder to find as non-Russian tube manufacturers are ramping up more and more, and the Russian stuff is flowing again...note the guitar amp biz uses way more tubes than hifi ever has..."Vinyl is dead"...remember that?
Devore O vs Audionote
I didn't like the Heresy IVs at all...they redesigned the mid horns and blew it seemingly. I might warm up to DeVores (but likely won't unless somebody gives me a pair of 'em) in my system but I like the idea of well executed horns like those in t...
Mid-fi tube vs high-end SS
Why is any man eating another man poison? "Man poison again, damn." Pool house, game room...I compel all of the help including my valet to listen to mediocre systems, and in the evening they just avoid me...could be the tubes or maybe it's me...
Devore O vs Audionote
Yeah...A D’Agostino "Relentless" amp or 2 McLarens...The things I own weren’t overpriced, they are simply great sounding and fairly priced great designs...Indeed, manufacturers can charge whatever they want but if I sense overpricing (relatively) ...
