Help me upgrade my beginner system!
@OP. That's a nice system you have put together. I second the recommendations that you make sure any room acoustics issues are dealt with and find yourself a good dealer. To the extent that advice can be given remotely, I agree with your focus on...
What is the proper loudness for listening?
80-85 db is as loud as I go and I'm happy to listen at way lower levels than that at night when the ambient noise level is lower.
I feel it is time to upgrade my 1977 system.......
@OP - What model is your Music Hall Turntable. If it's one of the more budget offerings, you should include a Turntable / Arm / Cardridge upgrade. As regards amplification, a high quality integrated is more than sufficient for your speakers given...
MQA Declares Bankruptcy
@tunefuldude. I think one way in which tighter economic circumstances would have impacted on MQA relates to the fact that hardware manufacturers are less likely to be buying licences for a technology that appears to be losing traction.
MQA Declares Bankruptcy
@OP and Tuenefuldude - regarding MQA's financial situation... MQA is essentially a software company whose success is dependent on licencing its technology to third parties, whether they be streaming services or hardware manufacturers. MQA has ha...
Tidal class-action
MQA is in Administration. Individuals declare bankruptcy - not companies. In the UK administration provides a period of protection from creditors seeking to have a company wound up, while the administrator makes decisions on the future of the comp...
The best part about MQA bankruptcy..
Bankruptcy applies to individuals. Administration is an option in the UK for insolvent companies. MQA's has been heavily loss making for the past couple of years.  Administration involves handing over control of the company to an administrator who...
Law Of Diminishing Returns?
Around $50k for a full range single source system - source, amplification, speakers and cables. For these purposes full range covers dynamics and bandwidth capable of generating adequate spl's in a medium/large room.
Pass Labs XP32 or XP22?
I have direct experience of both preamps paired with 60.8s. Unsurprisingly, the 32 is better than the 22. It's more refined tonally, and more organic sounding. But at this level, the differences are relatively finely graded, not night and day. The...
Home audio or pro audio?
Pro audio is a pretty meaningless term - too general. Top quality studio level gear is not inexpensive - though not at the same level of cost as high end domestic hi fi. Although, top end pro monitors can be fairly high en in term of price. DJ or ...
Used vs. new
@OP. If your choice is between a D4 or D2/3 802, get a used one - they are more natural sounding than the D4 (within the overall context of those speakers generally having a distinctive house sound). Make sure an second hand pair is fully tested t...
Describe the "new HiFi sound"?
There is no new hi fi sound. The sound of real music hasn't changed so why would there be a new hi fi sound. Just sayin...
What is the VERY BEST CD album you've ever heard?
Everything by Cake - as in - any of their albums.
Brand New Vinyl Static and Pops
A lot of new vinyl is noisy - moreso on average than back in the heyday of vinyl - in my experience.
Passion, or ..... Precision?
The pre-apex Bartok is rather analytical sounding - probably not the best match for the choice of listening material.
