Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Like him or not, Sun Ra music come from jazz and is described as free jazz...

Wrote to wikipedia and advise them to change their labelling... Guess what will be the reaction ?

When we dont like someone we dont expell him from history because our taste said so..

I dont like Stockhausen nor Varese nor Xenakis but it is important part of classical music history...

Sorry...

😊

Just because music is improvised, does not make it Jazz.

Cheers

@stuartk Middletown NY is about an hour and half north of Mid Town Manhattan. I pass by it often while taking 87N to the Albany area in my semi. I also have a friend who has a house and 45 acres there.

Of note is that the small town of Goshen, just south of Middletown, was the birthplace of Willie The Lion Smith, one of the greatest American jazz pianists and a big influence for Fats Waller and Duke Ellington.

Re: Sun Ra

The Sun Ra Arkestra Musica Director, Marshall Allen, is 99 years old and, by the look of him and the way he speaks, is healthy in body and mind.

(2) Sun Ra Arkestra's 99-year-old director says musical inspiration keeps him energized - YouTube

Sun Ra music is not a commercial product , it was an experience to live in real time... Cd give an idea and also listen to those musicians who experienced this for decades with NO real MONEY, NO real FAME ...Only the musical experience 7 days/7 days ...

I dont like and i dont hate Sun Ra music ... I am interested and fascinated by the character and some of his musical output revealing a great musician ... A genius if the word means something but not only a musical genius but genius as a human being ...

Yes -- I’m familiar with Goshen but had no idea it was the birthplace of a well known Jazz pianist. My grandparents lived for a long time in Slingerlands, outside of Albany-- we made many trips up and down the Thruway when I was a kid!

The only other guy I’m aware of who’s from the Hudson Valley is the guitarist John Platania, best known for his work with Van Morrison, purportedly born near Woodstock. The 1980 live at Montreux dvd is a great example of his tasteful playing and a killer show, overall, for Morrison Fans. What a pity this is not available as an audio CD!

RE: "free Jazz at its best", the older I get, the less tolerance I have for disharmony, whether political or musical. Not saying this is necessarily a good thing, but it’s what’s true in my case. Perhaps, were the world less chaotic (or I more centered), I’d feel differently.

It's fascinating what M. Allan says about every listener coming to the music wanting something different, and how what Allen plays is a "spiral, never-ending", which allows each listener to get what they seek from the music, "when it's their turn".  I guess I'd have to listen to more Sun Ra to see if, in fact, the music does come around to a point where it's "my turn".

I feel exactly as you feel...

It is just that i make exception about "free jazz" with the like of  genius Eric Dolphy for example... I dont like most free jazz...

Or for "cosmic jazz or interplanetary jazz" i make exception for Sun Ra , because there is an intent manifested in his music whch is not chaos or disharmony "per se"... And anyway this man is very interesting to know... I even bought his biography but i did not read it yet...

How many musicians wrote or played music to transform the world ? John Coltrane , Scriabin , Beethoven and Sun ra among few others had this Promethean idea to recreate humanity with music healing power... It takes a fabulous hubris to think to be able to do  so and at the same time a total humility  as a service to  the greater ONE ... Incredible Coltrane, Scriabin, Beethoven and sun Ra and few others i cannot name at various level of hubris, service  and devotion....

Something different...I am not sure if  i miss the usual pianist...

But the russian trumpeter and the american saxophonist friend are amazing in complicit playing...

@mahgister

I saw them play together both in Dave Holland’s Big band and Octet, both of which feature vibes in place of piano.

If you’re not familiar with Holland’s discography, you’re missing one of the premier Jazz bassists.

I was fortunate to see Holland’s celebrated Quintet, that included Potter, 4 times:

I know Dave Holland... I even have plenty of him... I prefer to recommend here less known name who are great...😊

I look for jazzman i did not even know the name... I admire Oscar peterson and i love particularly his albums dedicated to other composers... but everyone here know Peterson or Holland...

How many know Alex Sipiagin , Igor Butman , or Jan Johansson who is a real genius ?

I did not even read their name before discovering them by chance... I like to track unknown geniuses... Like a hunter track a deer in his rifle sight...😁

I am in the hunt right now in Japan jazz, Russian jazz, Nordic countries jazz, in particular...

I already know Potter as a great sax player but how did you feel about the russian trumpet ?

I like him and i want to listen more...

That makes sense !

I like Sipiagin’s playing enough to check out his work as a leader.

Don't know why I haven't done so, already.

I just looked at his All Music listing and there are more releases than I'd expected, including several with Chris Potter. This will be a fun exploration.

Wow! thanks...

I did not have anything of him...

Great musician at first minutes of listening...

Gene Ammons,   Boss Tenor.

Incredible album!

It seems i must upgrade my Sonny Stitt files...

I did not know who to listen to this week, i am embarassed by geniuses numbers...

Thanks...

@alexatpos

Ever since I got a streamer, I have not bought very many CD’s, but I have streamed and enjoyed both albums.

@curiousjim  If by any chance you do not have these two albums.

@stuartk

I’ve been reading your conversation with @mahgister about artists and I noticed that Igor Butman was not in the Penguin book and I was kinda surprised.

I am flabbergasted by Gene Ammons singing...

I need to go in search mode...

Jan Johannsson the genius jazz pianist is in the Penguin...

Butman is perhaps a bit  too much contemporary to be there...

... or this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZa0SXo57p8

I actually just finished the Guide To Jazz Recordings and I wrote a copious amount of notes.  While listening to all these great people, I’m hoping to put it all into some sort of Excel spreadsheet.  I’m happy to say that I have that I have a ton of new music to enjoy!

@mahgister

Stitt recorded an awful lot but only a small fraction of his output has been available on CD, so I haven’t actually heard that much of it. "And the New Yorkers" is my favorite of those I’ve heard.

@curiousjim

Butman is a new name to me...

Potentially embarrassing name "but man", can he play!

Sorry for the adolescent humor.

I'm listening to "Reflections" co-led with Conrad Herwig, as I was drawn by the personnel -- Sipiagin, Kikoski, Watts, Davis. I'll probably have to buy this one. Thanks!

What about Jerry Bergonzi ?

I especially like "Tenor of the Times" .

The whole album isn't on youtube but here are a couple tracks:

Sorry for the adolescent humor

No apologies necessary as I refuse to grow up.😁

@stuartk

What about Jerry Bergonzi ?

He’s great. Since I bought a Bluesound Node and Amazon Music HD, the world is my oyster, for $8.99 a month.

Butman is a friend of Wynton Marsalis...

The two, Butman and Sipiagin  are Russian jazzmen...

They seems interesting to me the more i listen , they are different...

If you want a genius try Jan Johansson... A sweden pianist...

Many albums are folk music inspired jazz... Very relaxing...

Now i like Gene Ammons very much.... It is a singing sax master...

😊

@mahgister

RE: Jan Johansson: yes; very relaxing. Interesting style -- don’t think I’ve come across anything similar, before. I'm intrigued.

Butman, back atcha:

I’ll have to see if I can figure out which of his recordings contains this tune...it kind of reminds me of movie soundtrack music... end-of-a-love-affair scene.

I think it is the only place to buy this tune ... It come from a russian album ...

If you use Qobuz, Igor Butman is very well represented there. Likewise Jan Johansson. My "must play" list is growing.

Vijay Iyer, "Black and Tan Fantasy":

Was reading a Music Direct ad selling Blue Note tone poet series and the first album listed was Herbie Nichols,  Herbie Nichols Trio.  So I’m about halfway through it and it is a wonderful Sunday morning sound.🎶

Re: Dave Holland.

I have seen him live a few times myself but never with a big band just the sextet.

This is a must have live session and on my desert island list.

@ho249 I prefer Spotify for 10 bucks a month with unlimited access to millions of songs of all genres. Its not Hi Res but 95% of everything I listen to has adequate dynamic range which I improve with my Qudelix 5.

I saw Vijay Iyer live with his trio plus alto sax virtuoso Rudresh Mahanthapa. Here is a duo with Mahanthapa and Iyer:
