Soundsmith Straingauge SG-200 cartridge system
...the comments about lack of harmonics implies technical inaccuracy in so far as tracing what is in the groove. That cannot be inferred from my comments and it's demonstrably untrue: a cartridge is involved in more than just groove-tracing. Disto...
Soundsmith Straingauge SG-200 cartridge system
Thanks, Raul. Our ears/priorities certainly do differ in some ways, always have, but we seem to have reached similar conclusions about the Strain Gauge (I assume you meant SG, not SS?). You may be perfectly right that it displays other behaviors b...
Audio Desk Record Cleaner-Anyone buy one yet
Tbg, Thanks for the recommendation. I'm aware of the AD's build and operating principles. I discussed them in detail with the US importer and the German designer long before the machine arrived on these shores. Its advantages of speed, quiet and c...

Soundsmith Straingauge SG-200 cartridge system
I've never heard a Decca London Ref, sorry. The original SG I heard (at RMAF a few years ago) had oodles of dynamics, a full frequency range, speed, weight, heft, etc. Everything it did it did well and nothing was distorted. However, it lost or se...
Record Cleaning Machine - Loricraft PRC-3 vs. 4?
Hey Dan, congrats! Now you can take 45 minutes to clean an LP like the rest of us audio-nuts.Just joshin' folks. Dan has seen my PRC3 in action and knows what he's getting. I re-cleaned an LP of his once during dinner and the improvement was start...
Soundsmith Straingauge SG-200 cartridge system
Doug, I get the impression you don't think the Straingauge will be as 'fleshed out' as the Orpheus, and yet Arran states it isn't tonally thin in any way.Arran didn't state that he's heard the Orpheus. There's no basis for comparing his comment to...
Audio Desk Record Cleaner-Anyone buy one yet
Dhcod,Thanks for your interest. What my partner and I get for our (considerable) trouble is a groove that (to our ears) is as free of contaminants as possible. I'll describe our sonic priorities and then our standards for "clean", which differ fro...
Soundsmith Straingauge SG-200 cartridge system
If you've enjoyed the harmonic depth, complexity and subtlety of cartridges like the Transfiguration Orpheus, you'll find the Strain Gauge a very different experience. I second Stringreen's advice, listen to one before committing.
Audio Desk Record Cleaner-Anyone buy one yet
Mike,Thanks for the informative summary. Your experience is consistent with another person I know who owns a VPI, a Keith Monks and most recently an Audio Desk. The VPI is the least effective, though it's quicker than the Monks. It used to be his ...
Reducing Anti-skate On An MMF 2.2
Cueing that trends outward is not an indication that A/S is set too high. 1. A/S on many arms (including yours) is engaged at all times. When A/S is engaged it provides an outward bias.2. Absent a source of resistance, if the arm is free to float ...
Tonearm Noise
I'm not familiar with the Interspace, but if the pivot isn't designed to be lubed then don't. Do however, take the arm off the pivot and make sure both sides are very clean.Try using a longish wood pencil or other non-conductor to lift and move th...
Early digital recordings on vinyl vs. CD?
Learsfool, I agree there are inherent flaws in digital recording technology, as there are in every technology. Sorry if I gave a different impression. The last thing I'd want to be is a digital apologist, lol!Of course there are flaws in analog re...
Early digital recordings on vinyl vs. CD?
Fangroups everywhere, true enough. Believe it or not, some people are even fans of Neil Young! :-DAs I suspected, he was talking about CDs, which doesn't address the OP's question. I wonder... did Neil what'shisname ever hear a Telarc or l'Oiseau ...
Early digital recordings on vinyl vs. CD?
+1 to Phasecorrect's and Arh's posts. Outstanding stuff and often available for peanuts.
